Totally forgot about this one. I was once told by someone that Catholics didn’t believe in the resurrection and that’s why we have Christ on the Cross

Biggest myth I have heard is that Catholics added 7 books to the bible at Trent.

People honestly believe such nonsense

I actually heard that from a professor at a public university I corrected him but it was in writing because I didn’t want to embarrass him and I didn’t want us to get in a shouting match. I actually had a book a history book that claims that the Roman Catholics because you know they have to emphasize the Roman parts that technically the consecration of the sacraments is Magic. No, it is not.

Oh yes, magic sacraments and “cookie worship”.

It’s good you didn’t make a scene and was the bigger person. If these folks would study a few early church documents they would feel quite foolish for the remarks they make.

One of the other professors there is an Eastern Orthodox priest so I would imagine that they do talk about history. I loved having an Eastern Orthodox priest as a professor at a public university. Because even fundamentalist Protestants call him father

My father’s side of the family was largely non-practicing Anglican, and they had a lot of prejudices about the RC Church. When i was a teenager, my aunt asked me “What that was” on my crucifix. I didn’t know what she meant til I realized she literally meant the Corpus…I said…“Er…Jesus??” . She also asked if we went to Mass every week, when mom said yes, she replied incredulously, “Even in summertime??” to which Mom replied that God doesn’t take summer vacations. 😉 My Aunt also kept arguing that she was Catholic with a “Capital C” as that’s what her Anglican pastor had told her…a common argument from Anglicans that’s always a puzzler.

I dated a Jewish boy for over two years when i was in (Catholic) high school. His mom somehow thought that girls that went to Catholic school were wild and/or had bad reputations. The Jewish guy said he chauffeured a grad in the country that was held in a church…he didn’t get why there were “different Jesuses” (statues) everywhere…i.e. Baby Jesus, Adult Jesus etc.

The mormon bishop and his wife (during my brief sojorn as a mormon) thought that priests were paid by the congregation so had to censor what they said to suit the people or they’d be kicked out by them. They also thought that the Eucharist was cannibalism . Another Mormon friend thought our Masses were all in Latin, and a Missionary thought that Catholics weren’t allowed to read scripture on their own.

My husband is a convert from Anglicanism. His mother was NOT thrilled that he was converting, even though they don’t go to church at all and are not religious. she thought he HAD TO convert to get married and that was why he was doing it. She claimed she had a Catholic friend whose spouse had to convert.

My Anglican Grandma came to my high school grad, part of it was a mass. She saw the kindergarten class come in and said, “My, you Catholics do have large families, don’t you??”

Most of the milder ones I’ve gotten are what people get from Grade B movies or TV…they picture the Church pre-Vatican 2 (i.e. confessionals, nuns in habits, incense at every mass, altar rails), think the Pope still sells indulgences or that we have to do “Exactly” what he says in our daily lives to the minutest detail, and that we have to have huge families.

Catholics apparently believe that the monsters in Daniel and Revelation are real and we’re afraid they’ll come out of a swamp and kill us all
What?! YOU’RE not writing that while hiding under your bed with a stash of canned food??? Some Catholic YOU are… 👍

In their defense, nobody knows about what exactly is going to happen during the real-life Revelation, but still. We don’t live in Transylvania. XD

I’m not sure if this is nutty or just plan mean (you be the judge), but a co-worker of my father once told him that he would eat fish on any day of the week except Friday because that’s when the Catholics ate it and he didn’t want to be mistaken for one.

Even I as a non-Catholic thought that was kind of nutty.

Heard a funny joke the other day

The Catholic guy said he loves Christmas time because that is the only time of year when Protestants join us in the “worshiping of statues” with the nativity scenes is their yards. 😉

That’s a good one. And you know what, you’re right. I’d never considered it, but the predilection of many Protestants to never the less enjoy or have nativity scenes in their homes, yards, or even churches is perplexing isn’t it.

I mean some I’ve seen get around it by having live nativity scenes… but that always seemed just downright mean to me to put people dressed in 1st century middle eastern clothing outside in North American winters. 😉

LOL, you know Padres, we tour the mainly protestant neighborhoods here every Christmas just to see the interesting setups these folks have in their yards…they actually have contests to see who has the best lights/nativity scenes. And it never crossed my mind either, that these are vehement anti-statue/anti-catholic yet they are making exceptions for this 😃

Oh come, let us adore these statues together, dear protestants hahaha

How do you know they are “mainly protestant neighborhoods”?
How do you know they are “anti-statue/anti-Catholic”
And what’s wrong with having contests?

Your negativity is incredible.

Ummm, because I used to live in that neighborhood.

I recall reading about an anti- Catholic politician in New Mexico back in the 1930’s/ 40’s who would go to the Catholic Indian reservations such as the Pueblos and preach the evils of Catholicism. For instance, the ritual of nuns being impregnated by the priests and how the child would be slaughtered and eaten shortly after birth, how Catholics believe their excrement is sacred, etc. believe me, good taste and fear of eternal banishment on CAF prevent me from going any further on what this guy would preach to the native Pueblos.

About 100 years ago (and probably a good deal longer before then), many Protestants would hiss at Catholics if their paths would cross.

And I know this goes against the grain of the thread, but an example of nutty things Catholics do or say…

My mother instilled the habit of crossing ourselves whenever we would pass a Catholic Church at a very young age. Once I crossed myself when driving past an old rural Church of Christ (or was it a Methodist?) church. Mother was furious and severely admonished me for doing that.

“Jesus doesn’t live there!” she told me.

What kind of a joke is that? If the Protestants were actually bowing ad praying to the figures in the nativity scene it is not very funny IMO.

Persecuted Catholics understand the joke. Even Padres understood as a Episcopalian I’m sure he has heard it too.

Catholics are always accused of worshiping statues by zealots, when it’s not true.

Some of them(mainly the fundamentalists), are very vehement against any kind of “graven image”.

Do you really think that’s what Catholic do? And yes I do pray to the figures in the nativity scene but not to the statues but to whom they represent like Jesus for instance do you have a problem with me praying to Jesus? Please get back on topic. By the way I can’t recall ever buying 2 a statue sometimes I will go toward the Tabernacle which has the real presence of Jesus Christ or the altar which by the way is a Jewish practice, but I don’t recall ever been to a statue I might need before a statue but I am kneeling before almighty God am I not? I know the difference between a statue and what it represents I live in the south we have statues everywhere. There is a statue in the city of Aiken next to the Old Courthouse I think they might still use it as a municipal courthouse it is of someone a judge who was very important in the city’s history. Do you really think the people who go and take pictures of that statue are worshipping it? Do you think the people who sit down next to it are worshipping it? Do you think the people who put it up actually thought this guy was a god? As to the OP I think this is a good example

Bit of an over-reaction.
I don’t think that’s what Wannano was saying. He was just commenting on L.A.'s rather tasteless posts.
