You are right. The price of a lost soul is immeasurable. Shame on the wolves masquerading as shepherds.

The greatest stain on the history of the catholic church in the XX century.

But lets look at the whole of society -in that time period- not just the church!..

Pedophilia and Pederasty were largely ignored (or even tabu) during the first half of the XX century at all levels of society. By comparison, only recently the hype on sexual harassment came into the public eye. Also, only in the last decades of the XX century did this sad topic become a matter of public debate in Europe - not the church cases but all such instances. Better still, in most countries of the western world there was a long history of dissuasion by law enforcement against the victim when such cases were reported. And we can find countless such examples, in Europe, in the US, not to mention the rest of the developing world.

Ordained Catholic Priests know better than to emulate the world. Noah did not, it is why God saved him and his family from the deluge. Who will be saved when Christ comes again?

1 John 2:
14 I write unto you, babes, because you have known the Father. I write unto you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.
15 Love not the world, nor the things which are in the world. If any man love the world, the charity of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, is the concupiscence of the flesh, and the concupiscence of the eyes, and the pride of life, which is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the concupiscence thereof: but he that doth the will of God, abideth for ever.

You are totally right Casilda!! But we have to remember society has it’s own pace at evolving (the church itself has evolved during it’s pilgrimage in history )…

And I say this because: we tend to blame only the church and forget that these sad episodes were also a product of the society of the time. Which is of justice to remember! Only in the late XVII century did the first priests start to speak out against slavery (and the concept of human rights), something hard to imagine at the time…

Are there orphanages any more? Anyway, are you blaming the victims or the criminal priests for the payout?

But 40 million dollars could have helped children in orphanages.
It’s just over $200k per person. The diocese could have reduced this and the legal fees long ago had they taken these issues more seriously. I’m sorry but there have been plenty of shenanigans when it came to hiding any money. The diocese of my childhood put $10s millions into their cemeteries simply to avoid having to pay it out. Eventually they were forced to bring it back and make a payout. Again, you as a regular parishioner I’d think you should abhor that your diocese probably used your offering for legal fees addressing what should have been years ago. The money saved could have easily gone to support children or whatever and offered the church to morally to come clean…
