NY coronavirus restrictions on religious services declared illegal

I watched his press conferences almost every day. In one of them, he encouraged protests as being good “just wear a mask” and loudly uttered the phrase “churches are dangerous” when mentioning high risk activities. My wife thought I was being paranoid, but it felt like subliminal messaging/subtext.

To be fair, he talked about how religious ceremonies are important to many people, including him being Catholic, so it’s possible he only had good intentions.
 
Cuomo strongly endorsed the protests, as did my local government officials, who personally joined the protests. This is the same county pol who said church services, even outdoors, were risky.

Who said this stuff, Cuomo or DiBlasio? I’m hoping the latter, who has been showing himself inept since he took office. I have friends who live in NYC, hate Trump, are very liberal, and not religious, and they still have nothing good to say about DiBlasio.

I listened to his coronavirus conferences everyday for weeks, until those conferences turned into what seemed like campaign press conferences, even though he’s not running for anything this year.

I am not encouraging disagreement with your wife, but I would not discount your discomfort with Cuomo so quickly. In 2014 he publicly said anyone “right to life, anti-abortion” has no place in the state of NY. That, combined with his sweeping abortion reform with legalized abortion up until the moment of birth make his months long clamoring to “just save one life” from COVID 19 by shuttering our churches, and businesses disingenuous, to say the least.

I am very happy with the judges ruling and hope it is the first step to getting NY back to the frail republic we were as opposed to the Cuomo dictatorship we’ve been under since March.
 
I don’t know who said that direct quote but initially Cuomo ordered churches to remain closed until “phase 4” the final phase of reopening for the riskiest activities. We have not even reached that phase yet in my area of the state.

He has since changed his mind, first declaring a max capacity of 10 per service, with no consideration for the size of the church, and now we are allowed 25% capacity indoors. As the article states still lagging behind the 50% capacity allowed at certain businesses now.

I don’t live in the city so I don’t follow Di Blasio very closely but he does seem universally disliked as you stated.
 
Despite all his failings, Cuomo has shown remarkable leadership during this pandemic crisis. De Blasio, on the other hand, no comment.
 
Cuomo is a mixed bag and definitely not a great Catholic, but he did say he’d help NYC get a statue of Mother Cabrini after the committee containing DiBlasio’'s wife nixed it despite her getting the most votes in their poll. So there’s hope for him yet.
 
I have to concede, even as someone who strongly dislikes Cuomo’s politics, I was happy he acted while other states did not.

The longer this has gone on though, I have become more and more dissatisfied with many of his decisions. Not that I think I could necessarily do better, but I have no desire to ever become governor.
 
I agree. I pray for him often, there is hope for him and many of our Catholic politicians who often ‘let us down’.

I thought the same thing. He sounds like he wants to be on record saying certain things so he can pull them out of his magic hat when he wants to run for president someday. And I do believe that he will do that sometime.

But the thought of Andrew Cuomo being our president some day turns my stomach.
 
As someone in his state, I’m quite happy with the proactive measures he’s taken. I think there’s a reason why NY cases have leveled off while those in other states are rising dramatically, and it likely has to do with Cuomo’s administrative measures. I don’t view the protests in the same way that I view church for many reasons, obviously, but included among them is the outdoor nature of protests. We’re now able to attend Mass again, though with strong restrictions, but I worry about our priests. Our pastor is 78 and another priest at our parish is 92.
 
If parishioners have a choice to stay home, pastors should also have the option of avoiding exposure and continuing to livestream. I hope their Bishop kept this option in mind.

I’m strongly against draconian government mandates while taking voluntary steps on my own, one of which being live streaming Mass with my famly.

He’s unelectable, largely due to the virus business.
Even if those in his own state or surrounding area like him, much of the rest of the country would not.

At the beginning of the crisis his approval rating was 78% and at the end of May it was 66%. I hear neighbors whining about “King Cuomo” but the most rational minds around me recognize that most of his directives have been necessary and positive. He’s got problems, no doubt. But I don’t think it’s accurate to say “even those in his own state” don’t like him much. At least not from where I am in the state.
