O Little Town of Bethlehem word change!

WHY??!? in this mornings Mass as we sang the second verse of O Little Town of Bethlehem, did we sing “and praises sing to God our King and peace to*** all*** on earth” ??
The correct line is “peace to men on earth”.
I was so irritated at this pc stuff that I sang the word “men” loudly.
This was in the actual missal.
Just little things like that really get my goat! :mad:
Anyone else notice this this morning?
 
We didn’t sing O Little Town of Bethlehem, but we did sing *The First Nowel *(or was it Nowell?), which JS Paluch footnoted as being “The English spelling of the French Noël and original to this carol” (approximate quote).

Now I am a red-blooded American and don’t even *like *the French, but that’s just stoopid. It’s not the English spelling. It is the *wrong *spelling!

Is “we” the “English spelling” of the French oui? No, it is the wrong spelling. Is “seevooplay” the “English spelling” of the French sil vous plait? No, it is the wrong spelling.

Don’t be stoopid.

You have hit on something that burns me up too. I hate it when they change the words to hymns for the sake of “inclusion”. But I think it is especially greivious to do it to Christmas carols. As the cantor, I never know what to do with that.

Oh that is so cool. Nowell is soooo Episcopalian it’s not even funny. I am French and I live in Louisiana and I don’t like the French either. (Hey, I am a veteran and red-blooded too - my ancestors stood on the plains of Chalmette and repulsed the Brits at the Battle of New Orleans). Someone needs to go and check out the connnection between England and Aquitane - that’s in France in case you didn’t know.
 
Huzzah for the OCP (oregon catholic press) and their hymnal meat grinder and all around liturgical disembowelment!

Dear catsrus,

You’re not alone. This morning, since two ladies in the pew ahead of me were gabbing it up with trivial chit-chat before Mass, I leaned forward onto their pew with a smile on my face to let them know that other people could overhear them. One of the ladies said to me, “Do I know you?” I answered that I was new to the parish, and before I could start in on how we should maintain reverent silence before Mass, I was advised in the friendliest of manners that I really MUST join the contemporary choir, which meets on Tuesday nights, and that I would absolutely LOVE it. She then left for the choir loft, but her talking-partner friend remained seated ahead of me.

Well, we got to a “contemporary hymn” where the lyrics went, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth.” I made a HUGE point of singing “HIS people on earth”, stressing the word “HIS” at the top of my lungs … leading me to believe that I may not be so welcome at choir practice after all, especially if the talkative woman in the row ahead of me goes and reports to her choir member friend. 😉

Maybe you, me, and other like-minded kindred-spirit souls should start up our own choir, eh? :cool: 👍

I think their hatchet job on Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is even worse.

End of second stanza -

Pleased as man with man to dwell; Jesus, our Emanuel.

Has become -

Pleased as man with us to dwell; Jesus, our Emanuel.

It kills the rhyme with Emanuel.

We also sang the First Noel, spelled Now-ell. How dumb! I always thought it was just a phonetic spelling for those people who don’t understand French. But this is Canada and French is our second language!
 
be sides whne sung the mouth remains open and so the sound made while saying noel, is no el not no well!!!

We sung it tonight at mass! definatly no-el phonetically!

French is (or was) or second language here in Louisiana. All of my life. I well remember my grandmere and great grandmere speaking in French. It is still common here.

Question: Do you guys have ant room up there for your Southern cousins?
Unfortunately our cultural bonds here have been shattered by Katrina. And our Beautiful (and superior) French Culture and Language, are being replaced (rapidly) with something else…

The beautiful French culture is alive and well in Canada! And yes, Canada has lots of room! When you were experiencing your Katrina disaster, I was on the BC list to help out for a 10 day stint as a paramedic, but it never materialized. I guess your own guys did the job so well that we only sent 8 paramedics from Vancouver to help out for 10 days.

I have had the same question. I live in the same city and have been wanting to show up on their doorstep and ask just whats going on, not to mention the book covers they picked…ugly!

That was an excellent question, so , because I just happen to have one at home, I looked.
It was published by Oregon Catholic Press. (OCP)
I get so tired of the inclusive language thing.
In my last parish, we also sang, “Glory to God in the highest and peace to GOD’S people on earth”. I always would sing “HIS people on earth”.

I’ve been in the Episcopal Church for 28+ years and I have never seen that spelling.
 
I generally sing the masculine words I grew up with.

My personal least favorite is how the song “Whatsoever You Do” was changed. Instead of, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me”, it’s now, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my people . . .” I have 4 brothers and I always took the song very personally!

Funny thing is, I was on retreat this weekend w/ about 2 dozen women. We sang the masculine words to many songs and not one woman was offended. Fancy that! —KCT
