Obama giving Notre Dame's Commencement Address?

Good for ND for sticking with their Tradition!

He has yet to be proven anything the like of what you are accusing him of… he IS our President. He has already put in places social programs for the impoverished (it was nice to see balanced reporting on the good work the administration has done in our State Catholic paper along with the less admirable acts in regards to abortion).

Lest we not forget that actually it was the last President’s policies that started killing more babies a couple of years ago here in the US. Let us not forget the number of our children who have died in an arguably unjust war. Let us not forget the hundreds of thousands of women and children who have died in Iraq. Let us not forget the hundreds of thousands of children lost from infant mortality because we, the most powerful prosperous Nation on the face of the planet, refused to provide them and their mothers adequate healthcare. Let us not forget that Republicans have been in power twice as long as the Dems since RvW…

I believe Obama deserves the benefit of the doubt… lets see what the Abortion rate looks like in 4 years. I gave our former President the benefit of the doubt even when the CDC abortion data stopped showing up on time and took years to “produce” after always being there a few months after the previous years…oddly enough it quickly started showing exactly what I expected. The Republican policies started to reverse the decreases in abortions we saw in the 90s… how convenient that the date from 2001 barley came out in time for the 2004 election… but we had the 2006 data in time to see the failed polices at work. More children dying in the 19-24 age group and the other groups flatlining…

While claiming to separate politics from science, he has in fact separated science from ethics and has brought the American government, for the first time in history, into supporting direct destruction of innocent human life.

This will be the 25th Notre Dame graduation during my time as bishop. After much prayer, I have decided not to attend the graduation. I wish no disrespect to our president, I pray for him and wish him well. I have always revered the Office of the Presidency. But a bishop must teach the Catholic faith “in season and out of season,” and he teaches not only by his words — but by his actions.*

The bishop clearly agrees that this is not acceptable, but it’s unclear if he has the authority (either civil or canonical) to retract the invitation. We would ultimately need to read the statues of the university to determine this.

The devil is the father of all lies, and the law of man should not be against the law of God. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, and what has happened? Federal funding for the destruction of embryos, and maybe soon, we’ll have FOCA. I do not trust him, and he has done nothing to earn my trust.

Good for the bishop!!! Obama’s policies are not only anti-life, FOCA is pretty much a one-finger salute to Catholicism in that it will be forcing Catholic hospitals and doctors to perform an act that they consider to be murder as well as forcing other Catholic institutions–including schools, churches, support services, to provide information on abortion–without any commentary regarding our beliefs. It also bans pro-life activities—a serious form of censorship.

I hope Notre Dame grads who respect life and their faith will also stand up for their faith over “tradition”. It’s one thing to respect the highest office in our land–but quite another to recognize a man who is in every step of the way claiming he has a “mandate” to abolish Catholics (and other religions) rights to speak out against a heinous act like abortion. No other president has gone this far. Shame on Notre Dame for inviting him. Shame on those who think he’s doing the right thing.

The question isn’t whether George Bush was a bad president, or whether or not you like Republicans, but whether the most pro-death politician ever should be speaking at a Catholic University named for our Blessed Mother. He *has * all ready proven what is being accused of him. Look at his voting record in Illinois and Washington. He *is *for killing babies up to the ninth month; he *is *for killing them to harvest their cells. Look at his appointments; we’ll be paying for abortions soon and Catholic hospitals will be required to perform them. That’s not my opinion, it’s his.

From day one, I didn’t trust him and sadly, he’s proved my every concern right! If only the republican party had presented a strong candidate…

For the record, me giving him the benefit of the doubt does not mean he got my vote! 🙂 I agree with you completely about wishing for a stronger candidate.

The POINT is that this whole thing is just a point of view and based upon statements as actions.

Thus far Obama has reversed the Mexcio policy but what will that really do? Groups “claim” estimates on both sides but we don’t know for sure yet.

My point is that people can claim to be or say or do whatever they want. The proof comes down to the facts though.

Many Republicans claim to be Pro-life, yet their policies - time and time again, have been shown to increase the number of abortions in this country. That’s a fact, go and look it up at the Centers for Disease Control. These same policies tend to reward greed and increase poverty as well - something we should be against as Catholics.

Many Democrats are Pro-choice yet their policies seem to actually help and decrease the abortion rate and during Clinton the Pro-Life movement grew by leaps and bounds as well. As the USCCB has said, FOCA is not the worry - it’s making Catholic Hospitals do abortions against their will and to that end Obama met with the Archbishop the next day.

So we are left with a paradox - it’s not about me not liking GWB. I do not like most of his actions and I do not agree with them but I do not know the man. It’s about what people say and what their actions actually make happen.

As I have said many times on this board before, talk is cheap - actions speak louder than words.

I will say that I do agree with the Bishop’s stance though. While I also agree with the schools. The school has a tradition. When they asked GWB (whom I too supported at the time) no one knew for certain that his actions would reverse the trend on abortions nor that we would invade Iraq w/o just cause etc…

Just like now with Obama. We don’t know. Yes he has voice his opinion for choice which is against ours at the highest level. However he is a secular President and we do not know what his actions will bring. It may be that we are looking at another big decrease in abortions in 4 years.

I pray that is the case because being Pro-Life to me isn’t about Republicans or Democrats or what people say, it’s about the number of children that are murdered each year, it’s about stopping the death penalty, it’s about stopping unjust and unneeded wars, it’s about health care so that women who want to have children can have healthy babies, it’s about social programs so that when someone is down on their luck they have a means to get back on their feet again… it’s about compassion which I also believe my Savior and my Church teaches.

Again, George Bush is not in the argument. He’s not the president. The argument is whether a man with a **proven record ** (yes–he does have one, both before and after taking the office) of pro-abortion policies should speak at the commencement a Catholic University. He has a record making him–by far–the most rabid abortions rights advocate ever to be elected. You are right by saying it is about someone’s actions. Look at his voting record. Look at his appointments. Look at his policies. Listen to his rhetoric. There isn’t the slightest doubt about his intentions or what he has fought for. He hasn’t been sitting on the sidelines, he has been fighting. It’s not about what Obama will do next month or next year, but what he has already done.
 
What are the facts? That the federal funds released from the Omnibus Appropriations Act can’t be provided to research that destroys embryos? What about funding made available from other acts?

(a) None of the funds made available in this Act may be used for—(1) the creation of a human embryo or embryos for research purposes; or (2) research in which a human embryo or embryos are destroyed, discarded, or knowingly subjected to risk of injury or death greater than that allowed for research on fetuses in utero under 45 CFR 46.204(b) and section 498(b) of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 289g(b)). (b) For purposes of this section, the term ‘‘human embryo or embryos’’ includes any organism, not protected as a human subject under 45 CFR 46 as of the date of the enactment of this Act, that is derived by fertilization, parthenogenesis, cloning, or any other means from one or more human gametes or human diploid cells.

It’s not like Obama was riding the fence and had a change of heart, this same thing goes through Congress every year, just as it did this year. Las Monday’s actions are in tune with Obama’s policy, not Omnibus for HHS. Wake up!

People aren’t numbers, human lives aren’t just numbers. This is about the principle of the most fundamental human right, life. Obama’s position on upholding that right is in complete contradiction with that, furthermore it’s in contradiction to the tenets of the Catholic Faith and is wholly inappropriate for him to speak at a Catholic U. This is not about who has more eggs in their basket, this is about a president not doing his job which is to govern and protect even the least of them. He votes against and makes policy against the rights of human beings to life at EVERY single chance he gets.

Like his buddy Oprah says, ‘when someone SHOWS you through their actions who they are, believe them’!!

His actions can’t be more clear, believe him. He is who he shows he is.

As for ND standing up for their Tradition? That doesn’t even make sense. Their Tradition is the same as all of ours, the Catholic Tradition.

From what I gather he can’t withdraw the invite, but he could put pressure on the board of trustees to do so because he DOES have the power to take the ‘Catholic university’ title and association out from under Notre Dame.

If they go through with this fiasco, I hope he does.

I don’t give a flip if he is the president. Someone that favors killing inocent children out of convience should not be speaking at any Christian instituion.
