Washington, DC – President Barack Obama used a recess appointment today to name rationing advocate Donald Berwick to become the director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The office oversees government health care programs and that worries pro-life advocates because Berwick has praised British programs that ration care.

Everyone rations care. There is literally only so many doctors in the world and in your city that are available at any given time. Therefore, health care is rationed, generally by the needy/wealthy. There is no escaping that we live in a world of limited resources where health care must be rationed. The key is who do we want rationing the care? His performance in this position will be evaluated in time, until then there’s not much to say.

Anyone familiar with Medicaid knows the overutilization is massive when the care is free. I very frequently read Medicaid patients’ charts, and the overutilization is absolutely amazing. But, rationing in the sense of “shortage of providers” is, until now, not much of a problem in the U.S. except in remote locales. Greatly increasing the number of people getting healthcare for free or on a heavily subsidized basis is much more likely to cause real “shortage rationing” than I think people realize.

“Rationing already happens” is a lame argument for rationing based on the mathematical algorithms of a central planner. It is more fair to ration based on the self effort put into affording the care, than to make sure everyone has an equal outcome.

This is the basis of our country, unlike any other. Our country has proven in its short existence that freedom of opportunity works much better for EVERYONE, than insistence on equal outcome.

This is no more subtle than the difference between Thomas Jefferson and Karl Marx. You who want the latter’s theories put into practice must at some point acknowlege that this is socialism instead of “rationing is already happening” drivel.

If you want socialism, then fine, admit it and we can debate socialism versus capitalism. Oh, and be sure and see if socialism is consistent with our Faith.

BTW…charity is far different from socialism
