Obeying your parents when they tell you to work on Sunday

My parents always tell us to clean up our room on Sundays. Would it be sinful to obey this command?
 
Only unnecessary servile work is not allowed- so while going to clean your neighbor’s house for money you don’t need might be bad, you still have to clean your room.

Why not take it upon yourself to clean it on Sat. so that you can consecrate Sunday to doing something to grow your faith, like reading the Scriptures? I just read an excellent thread on Apologetics/Sacred Scripture with all kinds of links about the Sunday Liturgy readings. This would be a great way to spend Sunday. 👍

No, it would not be a sin to obey your parents in this regard.

However, perhaps you should consider **keeping **your room clean. The fact that they have to ask, and that they “always” have to tell you, tells me that you are *slacking *in that area. You should anticipate that you must keep your room clean and not wait until your parents have to tell you to do it.

Keep it clean on a daily basis, and then you will have Sunday free to do other things.

I was just nodding my head in agreement with you…😃 then I remembered the state of my bedroom before I got married and was living with my parents 😊

Since you seem so “concerned” about violating the command against servile work on Sundays, perhaps you wouldn’t mind if your mother took it easy and didn’t make any meals on Sunday either?

That must be the first time I have heard the exultation “Awesome” in response to cleaning your room. I wish I’d shown such respect to my parents. You really are storing up treasures in your (heavenly) bedroom by obeying your parents. 👍

No, this does not include emergency services. These don’t fall under the “unnecessary” category. Neither do intellectual works such as homework and other studies. 😉

Try to organize your week so that on Sunday, the only “cleaning” that needs to be done is making your bed when you get up.

Moreover it is not inappropriate to clean the kitchen after a meal or to clean little messes you make throughout the day. Sunday is not an excuse to be lazy.
 
I don’t know what the parish priest would say, but we were not allowed to do homework on Sunday. There were no acceptable excuses for my dad. No homework on Sundays, and if you didn’t go to Mass on Sunday, you didn’t go anywhere else for any reason either.

Also, do I have a moral obligation to tell my dad and brother not to sell popcorn for Cub Scouts on Sunday? I believe this could be consdiered servile work.

My dad isn’t religious and I talked to him about not working on Sunday when he was working on the windows one day.

Answers greatly appreciated!
 
The Cub Scouts at our Cathedral sell popcorn after Sunday Masses. Not a problem.

In general, because of your age, you are not responsible to correct your parents or siblings. Your duty to correct begins when you have responsibility for someone else, such as being a parent, teacher or boss.
