I’ve been trying to learn more about my faith recently and I’ve been overwhelming myself with everything. I try to learn a lot about everything but it seems that as soon as I finish reading something I forget all about it. So, I’m going to focus on just a few subjects for now and learn a lot about a little. I would like it if everyone could give me their top 5 choices for topics (or objections against the Catholic faith) to learn about , such as doctrines, church history, or just the Bible in general. Could you please suggest good books or online sources to learn about each of your suggestions…all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

My best suggestion is to hang around these forums and click on anything that looks interesting in the Apologetics and Non-Catholic section. Before long, you will find yourself getting more and more familiar with main issues as well as how to respond. Also, ask questions whenever you have them.

I think it really depends on where you’re coming from. Orthodox, Protestants, Muslims, and Atheists would all give a very distinct list of objections.

You don’t have any suggestions as to the most controversial issues facing the church that I should be able to defend against?

  1. Transubstantiation
  2. Apostolic Succession
  3. Mary
  4. Infallibility
  5. The events of the Reformation
That should keep you busy. =D

Also to help you remember I recommend Peter Kreeft’s A Shorter Summa This should give you skills to memorize what you have read.

Hey that was post #666 for me. That’s interesting. The objections that people have against the church came up as my 666 post. Anyways study up on these topics to defend the church.

If it’s not too much trouble…could you suggest some things I might want to read to get more knowledgable? Can you access writings by early church fathers from the catholic answers library? every time I search for them I just get a bunch of articles from This Rock.

Oh! Don’t forget the Inquisition and the Holy Crusades! 😃

There is a three volume set on the church fathers by Jurgins (Jergins sp?), I believe. I would recommend get a Catechism or at least the Compendium of the Catholic Church. As for authors, there are a lot of big names. Kreeft, St. Augistine, Hahn, Cardinal Newman, St. Thomas Aquinas, St Bonaventure, all of these authors who help you out greatly. A good intro is the Catholicism for Dummies book by Father Trigilio which is available at any bookstore. Good Bible resources are The International Biblical Commentary, and the New Jerome’s Biblical Commentary. Many library’s have them and they have great essays on theological concepts. Those are both good Catholic sources.

I’m actually a fan of those two. But yeah I guess some will try to twist the events that happened there.
Not quite. A lot are pretty accurate. Just because a movie or a book is Anti-Catholic, unfortunately doesn’t mean it’s false.

Very recently, I’ve come to realize that History and Time itself is Christianity’s worst enemy-- not for being against it or in favor of it, but for telling the truth. :sad_yes: The history of Christianity is very different from its concepts.

Yeah I won’t argue there weren’t a bunch of idiots running around in certain centuries doing idiotic things in the name of Catholicism.

I will argue that usually in retrospect they are often blown out of proportion. The Spanish Inquisition is one. It happened. I won’t deny that. But was it the killing of millions that some have alleged? Heck no.

The Top 5?
No problem, here goes. I will include links that will be good for your study. Much of this will be from John Martignoni’s free MP3 site because I suspect you retain more of what you hear than what you read, and you can burn these to CDs and listen to them again as needed. 🙂
  1. Sola Scriptura.
This is the fundamental error upon which virtually every other modern error is based, and they almost all cascade down from it.
  1. Sola Fide.
Based upon # 1 above this is one of the most serious
  1. Once Saved, Always Saved?
Tied in with # 2 this is another area where we Catholics are very often subjected to challenges with allegations that we have no assurance of salvation (“You can know that you are ‘saved’ right now, today”)
  1. Purgatory.
This is often tied in to # 1 with the allegation that it is not found in the Bible, which is not at all true. The link above is my own article on it based upon a post here at CAF quite some time ago. John Martignoni has a brief section on it as part of another study on what will become my suggestion 5.
  1. Mary & the Bible; plus Purgatory & the Bible
Our love for and devotion to the Blessed Virgin is another common challenge that we catch from opponents of the faith, so it’s wise to be well versed with why you believe what you do there as well. John covers both in the link above.

One last resource of his that I have found very good is his talk, subsequent errors around, and one that we are most often attacked from.Two-Minute Apologetics**, **which really is hard to beatand is great as both a refresher for you as well as a handy evangelistic tool to be given to either questioning Catholics or curious/opposing n-Cs.

If and when you are interested in more active study on a wider selection of topics, I suggest the CA online Library, the Catholic Home Study Service, and the San Juan Catholic Seminars.

Zach,
Code:
If you like to listen to audio lectures/talks, etc., on Catholic teaching, go to the following website:
catholicaudio.blogspot.com/

There are hundreds of free downloadable .mp3 files with talks on almost every topic. On the right-hand side of the page are the topics. Click on the ones that interest you and it’ll bring you to a page of talks on that topic that you can download. You can either listen to them with free Real Player, or Windows Media Player, or if you have an iPod or MP3 Player, you can copy them to that and listen while you do other things. Very good stuff, for the most part.
