Is the Pope obliged to pray the Liturgy of the Hours / Roman Breviary / Divine Office
This may seem like a stupid question but, when I was reading up online about the Liturgy of the Hours, it said that all bishops and other prelates, all priests, and all transitional deacons are obliged.

I know that His Holiness is also the Bishop of Rome so he probably does but I was just checking 🙂

Thanks in advance

Yes, he’s obligated to pray it.

He can dispense himself, just as he can dispense any other cleric; but he still has the obligation.

All Deacons are obliged to say the Office, but Permanent Deacons only need say Morning, evening and night prayer.

There was a popular story that Padre Pio was dispensed because he said so many rosaries.

I remember reading that Pope John Paul II once touched down in his plane on a tour to a foreign country and kept all the people waiting until he had finished saying his Evening Prayer before disembarking and greeting everyone 🙂

There’s also a monk someplace who can’t sing for the life of him, but was given permission to whistle the Divine Office when it’s sung in choir.
