Hi guys, this is sort of a “is it a sin” question and a more general overview as to how long should we go to help our bretheren and if that regards only soul issues or also other kinds of issues.
I work in a bank. It’s a big building that has a little shop downstairs that serves lunch and has some vending machines.
Most of the people in the bank don’t use this little shop because the prices there are quite expensive. An anecdotal story is that they have to lower prices when food starts to get close to expiry date because people wouldn’t buy it otherwise.
Also, there is a supermarket about 5 minutes away from the bank where we can buy practically anything the store sells, and as far as I know all the prices there are cheaper.
Sometimes I do go down to this little shop to buy food just because I am in a hurry, or I don’t want to go outside and walk for 5/10 minutes to find a place to eat or buy snacks during the day. I also sometimes buy snacks in the vending machine when the shop is closed (it closes around 15h and I have to work until 19h). The other day I saw a chocolate in the vending machine for 30 cents. I re read the machine cost and saw that it really was 30 cents, although the outside price (the one that the lady puts on each of the holes) said 85 cents. I bought the chocolate, and dind’t care much about it.
In some other days after that the price was still wrong… so I bought again.
In the meantime I felt bad that the lady that put the prices forgot to change the prices in the machine and I went to talk to her. I even asked her if she wanted me to pay for the difference. She said she was going to change it and that it was ok.
So I went on my merry life (not…) and a couple of days later I went there again to buy a snack and the price was still wrong. I bought the chocolate again for the reduced price.
My doubt began after that.
Should I be constantly telling them that the price in that particular hole is wrong and only buy from the holes where the price on the machine is the same as the price the lady puts?
Is it wrong for me to buy those chocolates? Even if I buy other stuff of them that is clearly overpriced?
What is my duty as a Moral Christian man when I already warned them about this issue and they didn’t correct it?
I think they are nice people that are trying to make a living, althought they must assume that we earn a lot of money just by working on a bank (which is not true in my case as I work as an external and receive 60% of the average income in Germany although I have a Masters and could earn 120% if I could find a job in my area of expertise), but I also think that I already did my part in letting them know that they were losing money on that product.
What is the correct approach here?
