They were disobedient, disobedience to the Church which has the power to bind and loose is sinful. And the souls who ate meat on a non-lent Friday, when all Fridays of the year were days of abstinence?![]()
Just as it would be a sin for a child to disobey their parents and break a 10pm curfew. This is so even if that child’s best friend’s parents set a midnight curfew for the friend, or no curfew at all. And this is true even if that child’s own parents change their mind the next day and make the curfew midnight as well. The point is obedience to legitimate authority and legitimate commands.
Disobedience can be mortal sin assuming the conditions of full knowledge and free consent to sin are met. HDOs, as well as fasting and abstinence when required, are what are called ‘precepts of the Church’ - we are bound to obey if possible, on pain of mortal sin.
