How to continue to be an authentic friend when one becomes aware of a confidential impending action which would hurt this person, but due to the nature of the position which is held, requires strict adherence to maintaining the confidentiality of the information.

Insufficient information for anyone to give a concrete answer. You’ll have to weigh the different factors involved, like the level of harm, your duties to the different parties, your duties to yourself and any dependants, (if you did something to endanger your job), whether the action would constitute an actual injustice perpetrated by your employer, any points of contact with civil law, etc.

Ask your priest. He knows you and the situation.

You do not want to fall into the heresy of consequentialism.

Thank you for your reply. Here are the specifics: Our company is going through our annual budget planning process for next year. I am the Controller who puts together and generates the numbers. The new general manager, my boss, has told me to put terminations to several employees through in the plan, at the direction of his (new) boss. I have worked with all of these people for more than 10 years, with some good friendships developed with some. My position requires confidentiality to the highest degree, but I struggle with maintaining genuine friendships without giving anything away as to what is being planned.

(I’m new at this, so I apologize for the double posting.)

Been there, done that - more times than I would care to think about. Have sat in the confessional in tears telling Father that I cannot live with the lies.

Really, go see your pastor, tomorrow!

Thank you for the advice. I’ve already spoken to my spiritual director, and he wanted to make sure that, above all, I did not violate the confidentiality of my position. He reminded me that I have a greater responsibility to my family than to my friends.

I had the same advice - and that when asked directly (as I was on more than one occasion) “am I on the list” that I could not lie. I could say “I am not at liberty to discuss that matter”.

Thank you kindly for your prompt responses! That is sound advice indeed.
