Obliged to go To Confession?!

If I have the oppurtunity to go To Confession (and I believe I am in a state of mortal sin) Am I obliged to go?

The situation is that, Since I think I commited a mortal sin, I feel compelled to go. but My parents don’t allow me to go to Confession often. I have a 2 1/2 hour window in which I could secretely go to Confession, although I get anxiety by thinking about it.

Do I have to make this leap? Or can I wait for the next time they allow me to go, which could be months off.
 
I don’t think you’re obliged to go to confession. But you are obliged to refrain from taking Communion until after you’ve gone to confession (assuming you really have committed a mortal sin).

You are in a very difficult situation because your desire to atone for your sins has come into conflict with the Fourth Commandment – honor your father and mother. If your parents have forbidden you to go to confession, and they mean well, my advice would be to obey them and say an act of contrition on your own. But I’m no expert!

Yes, you should go to Confession.
Obedience to God is greater than obedience to parents.
Your obligation to your own salvation is greater than your obligation to obey your parents.
Do not endanger your soul by waiting.

Jesus did not have his parents permission when he stayed behind in Jerusalem after the Passover celebrations. He was doing the will of His Father in Heaven.
 
Or should I wait and talk to my parents to convince them to let me go 1 more time.
The anxiety of this moment is scary.
 
Im sorry for my annoying, and frequent posts, but if someone can answer this little question I think it could help (this is what I think was the mortal sin) (I think I may be scrupulous, so I apologize, I’m sorry) 🙂

If someone, were to laugh at something immature, and innapropriate, and this something occured while I was praying. Would bursting out laughing like that be a sin, or grave matter?
It would be disrespectful right?
 
That is not a mortal sin. You are human. You got distracted in prayer. Just keep working at it. Don’t make a huge issue with your parents over confession for that!

Following God is more important than following your parents. I have gone to confession a couple times but said I was going somewhere else so that my parents wouldn’t get mad :rolleyes:

Having said that, is it possible your parents are keeping you from going too often because you are scrupulous?

If it’s not possible for you to go, then it’s not possible. You may just have to wait. Try to not be so anxious, because God understands your situation and how contrite you are.

No, this is not a mortal sin, it’s not even close. Perhaps this is why your parents don’t allow you to go so often, because you are being scrupulous. :hug1:
 
You are being scrupulous. Mortal sin requires deliberate action. Sure, giggling while you’re praying is inappropriate (and you recognize it as such), but it won’t damn you. I think you need to trust your parents a little more. Ask them next time you’re unsure about something being sinful.

Like for Instance, whenever someone speaks (or writes), The Lord’s Name.

Or The Name Of A Saint. Or Speaks of anything religious,

I feel compelled to show Reverence,

(like in a salute, or bow type of way) I feel this is scrupulous, but Then I think that If I don’t do these things I am not showing enough respect or Reverence.

I assume I’m scrupulous here to right?
 
Well, if you can’t go, like, if your parents are the one’s who take you to confession, then you can’t. But if you have the opportunity, I’d say, go.

I’m in a similar situation. I depend on others to take me to church, since I can’t drive. I need to go to confession, but have no ride to get there until NEXT week, and I’m an anxious mess about it.

I am not a priest, but I do agree with another poster on here that it “sounds like” it is either NOT a sin or is venial sin, not mortal.

Remember that part of the Mass where we say…“I confess to almighty God…”? Well, that is your confession of venial sin. Go to Mass, receive the Sacraments and draw strength from them. God will take care of the rest. Then you can ask the priest the next time you go to confession.

I commend you greatly for the examination of your conscience. You are a great example of what a Catholic under Jesus Christ is. I would pray and wish more Catholic youth would follow your example of ways of Catholic Christian living under Jesus Christ.

I tell my wife, if my stepdaughters tell us they need to go to confession, then my wife and/or I make arrangements to get them there. We don’t need to know why, that is between them and Jesus Christ. The unfortunate thing is I have to keep reminding them throughout the months to attend Confession. The girls father has no faith base. The girls grandfather is Catholic, never attends Mass except a few special occasions. Never goes to Confession, but receives Holy Communion when he goes to Mass, so the example there shows living in Mortal sin. I do pray for him.

The Catholic church requires once a year preferably in lenten season. No problem. If we really look and see how the world is today trying to remove God and any organized religion to live the ways of the world, about once a month or other month would be more recommended by any practicing Catholic.

Our Catholic way of living is centered on Jesus Christ. And yes I have many days of trouble acknowledging that as a fallen human being. This lenten season, I have been going to Confession weekly. I have my own issues to be resolved.

We don’t put Jesus Christ and His Church mainly on a day planner. It’s quite the opposite. we are to live our daily lives under and with Jesus Christ. Conversion is not just for newly baptized,. Conversion is neccessary for all mankind on a daily basis.

I hear from certain Catholics in the 50-70 year old group that I am scrupulous and a “religious nut” or “Jesus freak”. But yet they are the ones who want the “Kumbaya Jesus Masses”. They are the ones that vote for pro-choice,pro-same sex marriage politicians, especially Catholic politicians who support this evil mess. They are the ones who forced the priests and bishops to remove the altar rails crucifixes, statues, kneelers and move the Tabernacles into “Church Closets”. They are the ones who want a government to “keep the Bishops and Priests well behaved”. They are the ones who endorse pornography, alcoholism, pro-choice, pro-same sex marriage, women priests.

You are doing great, and if your parents think you’re wierd then you can ask them when was the last time they went and this would be an opportunity for them to be with you at Confession. God Bless You.

No, that’s a beautiful practice, so long as you’re discreet and don’t do it out of pride or vanity (which would only occur if while your reverencing you think “Gee, I hope these people see how holy I am” or something to that effect)

Yes, if you feel compelled to show reverence each time, then that is scrupulous.
So, on the original question, the sin that you said was mortal was laughing at someone? That is not a mortal sin.

If you have scruples, then you should go to Confession at your regular time, perhaps once a month. Then, if you think that perhaps you might have committed a mortal sin between confessions, give yourself the benefit of the doubt, say an act of perfect contrition, and then go to Confession at your usual time.

Also I agree with CCOLLEY there are many sins we commit on a daily basis which are mainly venial sins in which are forgiven at the holy sacrifice of the Mass.

I believe the Pope goes weekly or even daily to Confession. So there is a prime example there.

I also am not a priest. Like I mentioned earlier about once a month or every other month Confession for a good practicing Catholic today. Usually a daily examination of conscience is good to keep you more aware of your relationship with God. You will then be more aware of mortal sins and then would go to Confession as soon as available.

Through the past nine years of my return to the Catholic Church (I"m 46 years old) I have heard from some Catholics older than me with foolish ear tickling talk and behavior of the “Spirit of Vatican II” and how the Church evovled like a “Kumbaya Jesus”. These type Parishes have the “no kneelers”, “Tabernacle in the Closet”.

Go to the top of this website and take advantage of “Faith”,“Encyclopedia”,“Castity” sectons of this website along with EWTN network. Get the the book Catechism of the Catholic Church along with the compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
If your priests and parishoners scowl or oppose the Catechism, then they have a real problem and need to repent.

No, something innapropriate, and immature simply occured, and I just burst out laughing, I tried to stop laughing a few times, I don’t know if the laughter (the laughing part is the sin I was worried about) was willed.

I also ended up remembering what happened and ended up laughing again, I feel really bad about it.

I Hope it’s nothing.

I also worry if I have broken my Lenten Penance. (To not use the Computer, or play video games)

Going online onto a Catholic wesite wouldn’t be breaking your penance right? 😊

You can put whatever limitations or allowances you want on your Lenten penance because it is a personal devotion (therefore there is no sin by breaking it). The only penances of this kind that are required by the Church are:
  1. Fasting for those 18 to 59 and abstinence from meat for those 14 and over on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday
  2. Abstinence from meat on all Fridays of Lent for those 14 and over
  3. Some form of penance or charity on all Fridays (NOT in addition to no meat on Lenten Fridays)
Also, just in case you are unsure the criteria for committing a Mortal Sin are:
  1. Grave Matter: This must be something that is a gravely disordered act.
  2. Full Knowledge: You MUST know one hundred percent, completely, and totally, without a shadow of a doubt that it is grave matter.
  3. Full Consent of the Will: You must decide, with total mental knowledge and clarity, to do it anyway
