It seems I continue to learn something new everyday.

Regarding Holy Days of Obligation, I searched quite a few places before I finally found one that said what DAYS they were. Here’s what I found:
In Roman Catholicism, Holy Days of Obligation are the days other than Sundays when Catholics are obligated to attend Mass. Below are the Holy Days of Obligation:
  • January 1, the solemnity of Mary
  • Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter, the solemnity of the Ascension (May 5, 2005)
  • August 15, the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
  • November 1, the solemnity of All Saints
  • December 8, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
  • December 25, the solemnity of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ
I am wondering, as I find it difficult to locate a lot of what I would think is basic information regarding the Church and everything from dogma to tradition, does anyone know where I might find a comprehensive Catholic calendar? I am actually imagining one that would include the saints’ feast days (yeah, all of them!) and Holy Days and things like that. I do imagine that something like that could be as thick as War & Peace… but thought I would ask.

Thanks all,
Many prayers for everyone on this great day of mourning…

Fiz

Here’s one for ya, my parish here in Kansas celebrates Assention Thursday on the following Sunday.

Maybe it would interfere with parishoners Thursday TV schedule if they had to go to mass. Anything to make the faith easy and watered down.

Like when I returned to the church after many years away. I confessed my myriad of sins and expected a hefty penance. Nope, after 20+ yrs of scandal and heresy, wanton debauchery and various illicit and illegal activities, my big penance was to “sit and think about what a blessing it is to be back in the faith”

WHAT!?!?!?!?!

jeez. Fr Cavanaugh would give me 5 Hail Mary’s for taking cookies from the jar without asking.
Sheesh!

Seems like you have a problem in accepting the authority of the church in matters of discipline.

The concept of penance doesn’t require an “equal restitution” for the sins committed. Any temporal punishment that a penance does not remit will be repaid in Purgatory.

Also, I don’t know if your penance was as light as you make it sound. It sounds as if your priest may have given you the opportunity to make as much or as little penance as you felt you needed. Thinking of the blessings of the Faith can take a very long time if one is so disposed. It can also lead to deep prayer and contemplation. One could make a fairly “hefty penance” out of it.
