Fratres,

I have been interested in obtaining the version of the Brevarium Romanum which the FSSP use. However I cannot seem to get the editions/versions straight. Does anyone know where I could obtain the set?

If possible a Latin-English side by side would be great, but a purely Latin edition would be fine as well.

Thank you,

MiserereMeiDeus

Do you mean a 1962 Roman Daily missal for mass?

You can get one here. It has the Latin and English side by side.

They sometimes come up on Ebay.

Here is a set that has been reprinted in England, they are 195 Pounds Sterling, very expensive.

There was a Latin English Edition published in 1964 by the Liturgical Press, it comes up from time to time on Ebay, usually selling for around 200 to 250 dollars in good condition. But it has the Psalter of Pius XII, which is technically a very good translation, but does not have the flow and ease of chanting that the Vulgate of St. Jerome has. Recently the edition was republished with the Vulgate Psalter by another company.

The FSSP and other groups of Traditional priests, both in full communion with the Holy See, and those who will hopefully return to full communion tend to use the Vulgate Psalter, as when chanting the Office in common it is a much better translation with the ancient Gregorian tones.

The Baronius Press is working on a Latin-English Edition of the Breviary that will have the Vulgate Psalter, the link to their project is here. baroniuspress.com/forthcoming_books.htm They also reprint other good Liturgical books for laypeople.

I can check the local Catholic used bookstore. They have a whole shelf of prayer books and may have this. If you want to give them a call, it is the Sacred Heart of Jesus Store, and their phone is (412) 683-4001. I don’t know if they ship, but if they don’t, I can pick something up there and ship to you as needed.

The FSSP had its own Latin breviary printed in the 1990’s, but practically not available today. Most priests are using the Nova et Vetera Breviary available from many sources (2 volumes Latin only with imprimatur) This is used by the SSPX too.

The bilingual Baronius press Breviary (3 volumes) will coming soon.

Here is a good collection of the available editions

fiedsparrow,

I have had the Sacred Heart of Jesus Store recommended to me many times before. I have yet to make the trip, but I am not far from Pittsburgh at all. Do you think they would have what I am looking for?

Filioque,

I have Volume III of the Liturgical Press, bilingual Divine Office. I have been looking for volumes I & II for a decent price for a while now. I would like to use a more traditional translation however. Nevertheless I would be delighted to find Volumes I & II to complete the collection and use them.

There is a three volume set on ebay that I just saw. Sometimes you can get lucky. I have found sets and individual volumes at Thrift stores like St. Vincent de Paul in Los Angeles from time to time. I also find people’s missals, for under 3.00 there. I usually donate the missals to our local Ecclesia Dei Assoc so they can resell them for a fund raiser.

There are still some issues with the Holy See and the SSPX so I would be careful. The Roman Missal I provided was approved by Pope Benedict in 2007 (Summorum Pontificum Edition) that is used in legitimate Latin masses that follow the 1962 Roman missal.

I would give the store a call and ask… they usually know fairly well what they have which, having been there, is amazing to me. It’s worth a trip sometime anyway – they have so many books there. Not sure how well you know the Bloomfield area (where the store is) but if it’s not a Friday, there’s a place on the corner of the next block called Tessaro’s that has the best burgers.

If they don’t have it they may know if they are likely to get a copy. The sister mentioned to me that they are going to Chicago at some point (I forget when) to pick up lots of breviaries.

Thank you! I will give them a call tomorrow. I’m not extremely familiar with the Bloomfield area but I am only about 40 minutes outside of Pittsburgh.
