I’m a practicing roman catholic and I understand how indulgences work, however I’ve had some confusion as despite church law never allowing indulgences to be sold, I’ve found a version of the catholic encyclopedia that says the church has sold them in some instances

Welcome to the Forum!

The “Church” has NEVER allowed the selling of indulgences. What people purporting to represent the Church have done is a different matter.

Selling indulgences is a mortal sin, it is called Simony and goes back to the time of the Apostles.

Thanks. However I do know that however I’ve found a catholic website referring to the indulgences granted for saint peter’s basilica being rebuilt

Catholic or a site of a catholic? I ask because the Catholic Church did not approve of those misrepresenting Catholic teaching.

please provide the link to this so others may also read this info in order to understand the topic better and to help others form responses to your postings

I believe they updated the site or someone removed it, because I can’t find it anymore
