I’m in college. My friends are inviting me to go to beach with them. I haven’t been to beach in years do to occasion of sin/temptation (Parents made me go with them when I was younger). I don’t want to back out in fear of being rude, but also don’t want to put myself in that situation. Ultimately I don’t mind staying behind, I rather do that anyways, but any advise?

If you’d rather not go anyway, then don’t go. I don’t think it’s rude to not go if it’s just a trip to the beach.

You know your own strength. If going to the beach would be a serious occasion of sin for you, then don’t go.

What are you worried is going to happen? Are you sexually compulsive in some way, and seeing a person in a bathing suit is going to send you off down some really dicey path?

If not, is it possible you’re thinking that it’s sinful to feel attraction to the opposite sex? Because if so…well, it’s not.

I hate the beach too, except for the scenery. Pretty boring after a while.

Depending on what beach you are going to, most are still pretty cold this time of year, even here on the southwest coast. People aren’t too likely to be running around in bathing suits. You can also go early morning, watch the sun rise over the ocean and see the beauty of God reflected in His creation. Then, if you’re really concerned about falling into sins against purity, spend the day in other activities: bookshops, coffee shops, art museums. Go back to the beach at night and marvel at the beauty of the moon, and the stars, and the sound of the waves. Praise God for the beauty He gives us there!

Is it really that much of a temptation? Don’t go if you don’t want to. But I think it depends how much of a temptation it is.
