Please guys, this reminds of the “how far can I go with my girlfriend before it’s a sin?” threads.

Peace,

It would be nice if that “report” was based on any kind of facts whatsoever. It’s basically one long way of saying “Drugs are bad, mmmkay?” while providing no actual scientific studies or basis for that opinion.

The following are just a few of the glaring absurdities in this article:

“Whether drugs are illegally purchased or distributed by the State, they are always harmful to man.”

Ummm, this statement is absurd. There are good drugs and bad drugs, drugs that help and heal and those that harm and destroy.

“Because drug dependence among young people is due to the weakness of our educational system…”

Huh??? Where did they get this? What is this based on?

“Lastly, the problem of drug dependence should rightly be extended to include many substances (tranquilizers, sedatives, anti-depressants, stimulants) that are not considered “drugs””

First of all, ALL of these things are considered to be “drugs” because they are, in fact, “drugs”. Secondly, what exactly is “dependence” on anti-depressants? A chemical imbalance that exists in the brain is righted by an anti-depressant. If the user suddenly goes off the anti-depressant, the imbalance returns and the person will feel depressed. Of course the user is dependent on the drug because the drug corrects a chemical imbalance! Are they saying this is a bad thing?

“Science and technology have always sought to take advantage of chemicals in order to cure pathologies, to improve conditions of life and to increase the pleasure of being together.”

Increase the pleasure of being together? What? Are they talking about sex here, and if so, why not just come out and say it? What are we, 5 years old?

“Consumption of these substances initially leads to isolation and then to dependence, and the intake of increasingly stronger products.”

This is a ridiculous generalization.

“When arguments are presented for or against the legalization of “soft” drugs, simplifications and generalizations must be avoided”

LOL! Has this person even read their own article! It is FULL of oversimplifications and generalizations as well as vague language! Pot? Meet Kettle.

Especially when I’ve noticed that weed makes people more sociable, not less. On the rare occasion I’ve run across a person smoking weed outside, I’ve almost always offered some. You just don’t see winos and crackheads doing that.

Gee, whenever I’m having a beer with some of my friends and see another one, I offer him one too. Then again, I’m not an alcoholic - but the assumption on this thread has been that whoever uses marijuana is abusing it, which would eradicate the distinction.

A couple of things:

First, yes, if you’re out with friends and drinking beer, that’s a social situation where it is expected to share with newcomers (i.e., friends who show up). That’s common courtesy.

I’m talking about perfect strangers. It happened a couple of months ago. I went with a co-worker to buy a soda and there were a couple of young adults standing outside near a bus stop smoking a blunt (marijuana wrapped in tobacco like a cigar). The young man saw that I had noticed what they were smoking and he offered me some. Of course, I said now, but this guy was a complete stranger to me. For some reason, weed makes people friendlier.

Finally, you’re absolutely right about the use/abuse distinction. Unfortunately, sometimes goodfacts (DEA propaganda) are more important than realfacts and people buy into the idea that even looking a marijuana is abuse.

I’ve actually had complete strangers at parties offer me beer, too, though it usually only happens in larger-scale situations rather than just a couple of buddies drinking. Alcohol makes people friendlier as well, though not as well as weed.👍

Sounds like you were smoking indica strains. Indica strains make you sleepy, relazed and give you that “stoned” feeling. So, tt’s true that if you smoke an indica in the daytime, it will make you lazy and stoned (which is why one shouldn’t do that!). On the other hand, if you smoke a sativa in the daytime, it will keep you awake and make you feel “high” but still able to think and function.

This distinction is something a lot of people don’t understand.

I stopped smoking tobacco because of its cost. I still smoke weed, with a doctor’s recommendation, and an eighth can last more than a week, which is still cheaper than tobacco.
I did not Know that there were types of cannabis that did not make you sleepy too relaxed and stoned.
Also the type i was smoking seemed to make alcohol double in strength. One drink felt like 2 and 2 drinks felt like 4 and 3 drinks felt like 6. I think it is to do with body metabolism being slowed down. I did use to use a bit of speed occasionally and because it speeds up your bodily metabolism you could drink loads and not even feel drunk. For some reason it kept you sober and alert. You could drink 1/2 a bottle vodka and feel no affect. you need to drink 3/4 to a bottle to feel the affect. Then it all depends on how fast you drink. But the danger hear you can still damage your liver in the body without realizing. This is why I think binge drinking has taken off here in the United kingdom.
People work all week and when the weekend comes they feel tired. Having a drink on top of feeling Tired seems to make you feel worse. So they used stimulants with the drink.

I was only doing it once a week or a fortnight for a few years when partying. Thinking i was doing no damage to my body. I had a routine blood test from my doctor. It was picked up that cell changes was takeing place in my Liver . So i stopped it all together.

Which is one of the points I made earlier that eating cake can be a sin for some people. The OP confessed he smoked pot and drank because it led to some poor decisions that he felt he needed to confess. For the OP, pot and drinking may be his particular down fall and constantly puts him in an occasion of sin. So the priest could be entirely correct that he needs to refrain from pot, but the OP doesn’t want to hear that.

Anything, any substance, can be sinful if it is abused and leads to a person making poor decisions that need to be discussed in the sacrament of reconciliation. A priest would not be doing his duty if he didn’t point out what is leading someone to their poor decisions and sins, no matter how much we don’t want to hear that we need to refrain from an activity that makes us feel good.

I think any priest would say the same to OP. The Priests will not give the OK. Because he has to Answer to God on the Matter. Also it would be safer all round.

The trouble with buying cannabis like all illegal drugs you can never know the strength of the drug. If you had weak cannabis before and you used quite a bit for it to work. Then next time you bought some and it is stronger. Then you used the same amount like the weak stuff you had before. In reality you have had to much.
Also mixing it with alcohol can be problematic because it doubles the affect of Alcohol or even trebles it depending on the strength of the cannabis. Then also it depends on how much sleep you had the night before.

Unless you know the person who grows it or you grow it yourself.

Exactly. I believe many people around here think that all marijuana is the same, whether it be medical or from “da 'hood”. Truth is there are so many different strains of weed out there. If you do your research you’ll know whats good bud and where it comes from.

Exactly. The fact is that pure, organically grown marijuana used moderately through a vaporizer is less harmful to the human body and brain than alcohol, tobacco and even a few cups of coffee.

It doesn’t help that for years, the government was spreading all this propaganda about it possibly being laced with PCP and other hard drugs to scare people to death, which is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

That’s one thing I’ve never understood. Here in California, I’ve seen people at bars who are drinking beers snort some coke and continue drinking. Apparently, it’s the same idea. I don’t get why one would want to continue drinking alcohol yet take something else to cover the effects thereof.

As an aside, yes, weed can enhance the effects of alcohol, which is why I never mix the two (actually, as I like to say, “I only drink in church”). Personally, I don’t like the taste or smell of alcohol, so I save it for special occasions where I’m celebrating with friends and/or relatives.

One quickly learns to check themselves as they smoke to avoid overdoing it. I’ve overdone it and it’s not pretty, believe me. Also, yes, if one is buying street weed, one day you may get “stress” (weak, ditch weed) and the next you may get “chronic” (decent mid-level weed) and on a rare occasion you may get the “OG Kush” (potent, high-end weed).

Personally, I go to a legal dispensary and have found that I get what I pay for in terms of quality and quantity. In fact, I only by it in half-eighths because if I buy a full eighth, it dries up and I have to use more to get the same medicinal effect. On the up-side, that means that I get to visit the nice people at the local dispensary more often (they really are nice folk). 🙂

Which is why I would never, ever recommend mixing alcohol and weed. Actually, I would never recommend mixing alcohol or weed with anything else.

Where does it say that smoking pot is a sin?
It seems that others have dealt with this answer on the thread. Reread those post entries.
Is it a sin because it alters the mind or is it a sin because it is illegal in society?
Because it alters the mind. Illegality does not determine the sinfulness, but it adds a factor to the sin.

Society does not determine sin. However, unless there is a serious reason not to, we are to obey the governing authorities.
Is it a sin to speed?
It is, or at least, can be. Speed limits and other motor laws are there to guard human safety; to disregard them is not only to disregard society’s laws, but also the objective of human safety.

The gravity of the sin would depend on the circumstances. Speeding to get a sick person to medical treatment would be no sin at all, if no other transport were available. Speeding for “fun” would be most likely a serious sin. Going 10 mph or kph over the limit on a high-speed roadway would be only a minor sin. Blowing through a school-zone at 70 mph or kph would be serious.
Its a sin to break mans laws or God’s laws?
Scripture tells us to be subject to the governing authorities. Therefore, unless there is a serious reason not to, keeping human law is “part of God’s law”.

There are valid reasons to break the human law; but “getting high” has never been such a reason.

Happy MMXI and ICXC NIKA!
