Are “acts and words of blasphemy” committed and uttered such as saying filthy words etc. against God or Virgin Mary by people having OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER amount to “sin” ?

If you have OCD, get help from a mental health professional for OCD. It’s a mental illness. You won’t find help here on CAF. You need therapy.

Sins are committed with free will and full knowledge. Mental illness diminishes both of these things.

Its not a problem of mine. I have read on Internet that some people with OCD have blasphemous tendencies. What I have asked therefore is a general question like “Are excessive liquour consumers sinners?” Does all mental illness diminish free will and full knowledge ?

That is NOT what OCD is about. Most of OCD is incredibly horrible intrusive thoughts or doubts and fears you cannot shake. It is an anxiety disorder. The compulsive behaviors you see are only part of it—the behaviors you see may or may not make rational sense (they can be seemingly unrelated to the anxiety that is actually causing them), but they are a desperate attempt to find relief and eliminate uncertainty. But the OCD victim will not be able to let go over their doubt, and in acting out the compulsion, is only reinforcing it—kind of like a junkie getting a fix—and making their problem worse.

That is why when you see posts from people asking “is this a sin” about something that is obviously not serious or strikes you as very strange, you have to be very wary of what you say. Always tell these people to seek a Priest or someone else from the Church to talk to and do not try to answer their questions here. People with scrupulosity (a form of Religious/Moral OCD that is distressingly common—scrupulosity being an old term to describe the condition of persistent doubt and fear and uncertainty) can be very badly damaged by asking questions here—which usually starts because they have overwhelming anxiety and doubt or have some fixation they cannot get out of their head. Engaging them, if you say the wrong thing could trigger more anxiety. Plus if other posters have different opinions, it will further confuse the issue for someone who suffers from this terrible condition.

No, people with OCD can have uncontrolled, instrusive blasphemous thoughts, particularly when in Church or when praying. They don’t commit blasphemous acts or say blasphemous things, they have a torrent of unwanted, distressing blasphemous thoughts being screamed at them in their head. The more they try to argue with their thoughts, the more persistent they become. They believe they are guilty of grave evil or are afraid they are—did they want these thoughts?, and try harder and harder to control their thoughts, but that makes everything worse.

So you understand then, good padawan, good.

I just want to say this is one of the forms my OCD has taken, and it I extremely painful. You’re not alone. One of the things I wonder is, if after taking medication it gets better, to what degree did I sin with the thoughts? The questions just keep coming with the OCD.
