hey. I know someone who has OCD (scruples), and alcohol is known to make the OCD worse. In the Melkite rite the body of Jesus is dipped into the blood, knowing that we use wine (ofcourse), can he receive it dipped into the communion wine! not sure exactly how much that bit of wine will affect him!

I never knew that had a name…“Melkite” rite. I learn something new every day here! 🙂

I don’t think the amount of alcohol in the wine that has become our Lord’s Precious Blood that is barely soaked into His Precious Body in the Eucharist would be enough to affect a person.

I had a similar discussion with an alcoholic once (he also is scrupulous). He was saying that he would not drink from the chalice because it would be too similar in his mind to drinking alcohol, but I don’t think we actually discussed the Melkite rite. From what I know of him (we are brothers), if the Body was dipped into the Blood, he would partake, because deep down he realizes this is Christ, not wine. I, personally, would partake either way, because I don’t see it as wine, I see it as Christ’s Blood. And any presence of alcohol is negligible regarding the Melkite rite.

The person can speak with the Priest who can guide him. It may be possible I would think for him to receive only under the appearance (accidents) of bread.

(PS: Having studied some Psychology along with Theology…OCD by the way does not = Scruples or Scruples = OCD …but certainly a person can have both and there can be similarities )
