Oceans are warming dramatically faster, new study warns

This rapid shifting of the north magnetic pole is extremely disturbing … much more serious than previously observed from the 1960’s.

There are several discussions available.

And it is not remotely caused by man-made [so-called “anthropogenic”] sources of influence.

“Not introducing those uncertainties in the first place” means discarding all the measurements with uncertainties, which leaves you with maximum uncertainty, as uncertainty is the lack of knowledge. “Some” uncertainty is better than “maximum” uncertainty.
That’s not actually applicable in this case. There is one number (temperature) that is a combination of measurements and calculations (not quite guesswork, but certainly containing best guess estimates). There is a second number (heat content) that is purely calculation, based on estimates of various constants multiplied by the temperature. Which number contains fewer estimates, the one with X estimates or the one with X + Y estimates? Which number is more likely to be accurate, the one with more uncertainties or the one with less?
If both numbers were equally useful you might have a point. But in determining the effect of ocean heating on air temperature, heat content is the only relevant measurement. But as I said in my “by the way,” why not ask the scientists themselves?

Yes, if the poles flip we will have a lot more cancer and birth defects and mutations. It might indeed be disasterous for human life. But so would a meteor the size of Detroit. That is no reason to ignore any other issues.

By the, despite the opinion of the narrator, there is no evidence that geomagnetic researchers are as distressed as he says. All we know for sure is that the location of the pole has changed so much that the navigational charts need to be updated one year ahead of schedule.

I’ll be the first to admit the numbers are not equally useful. It is much more alarming to be told the oceans have increased some incomprehensible number of zetajoules than to hear they have gone up a few hundredths of a degree. No one will be impressed by that number.

If your goal is to jack up people’s emotional response, then the movement of the magnetic poles won’t do it as effectively as listening to Al Gore yammering about global warming.

What’s the point about “jacking up people’s emotional response” to magnetic pole movement? Has anyone proposed a magnetic pole mitigation measure?

Pointless alarmism … which takes place all the time … as recorded for the past hundred years … from people who enjoy the attention.

Not quite everyone believes the oceans are warming dramatically. Here’s a study just published in PNAS that reached a different conclusion.

Our reconstruction, which agrees with other estimates for the well-observed period, demonstrates that the ocean absorbed as much heat during 1921–1946 as during 1990–2015.

The change in atmospheric CO2 in the first period was ~10ppm. In the latter period it was ~70 ppm.

Maybe that’s because magnetic pole movement can’t be taxed?

I wish the ocean would send us some of that heat. Supposed to get down to 10 degrees tonight. That’s horribly cold for here. It can happen for a night or two, but not every year. Where is that global warming when we need it?

It’s heating up places where we are not.

By the way, we are expecting -29 F in Minneapolis on Wednesday night. And that is horribly cold, even for Minneapolis.

You’re right. Times like this remind me of an old Jules Verne novel “Off on a comet”. Comet strikes the earth and instead of killing everybody on the planet, it takes a piece of it with unharmed passengers off on an elliptical orbit around the sun. It gets colder and colder and colder and they eventually have to go into deep caverns to access the heat from volcanism there. But it all ended well anyway, as hopefully this frigid weather will as well.

But you were right in not having the tools necessary to measure its temperature accurately for the last hundreds of years or so. 🙂

How deep have people drilled down

Not able to measure the temperatures prior to that either.

All guesswork.

Not good. It has been my experience in my life that cold weather is usually dry weather, or at least it is where I live. No part of that is good in my book.
