A older lady was kneeling behind me , praying, after mass…
I mentioned something to her, as I was readying to leave…
We chatted. She had never seen me close up before.
Laureate - about 70 years old.
Anyways, she actually gave me a Holy Card - from Fatima - she held.
She was there last year.

Sweet picture, Seagull! Thanks for sharing it. Thanks for all your replies on this thread. 🙂

May our Lady of Fatima, bless us all on this Anniversary of her coming to the three little shepherd children. By God’s Grace, may we all learn as they did to listen to our Mother, and pray: “O my Jesus, pardon us and save us from the fires of hell; draw all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of God’s Mercy!”

Thanks, Cruciferi, for your prayer – I heartily join you in praying for God’s Mercy, through Mary our Mother!

Thanks, Mark for sharing that account from from the NCR! The children’s being kidnapped, missing the Aug. 13 apparition and their experience in jail is a touching testimony of their heroic virtue. No surprise that Our Lady would appear to them on Aug. 19 – our trials are always permitted that we might grow in faith… their witness also gave rise to something good among the other prisoners. God is always working Good! (cf Rom 8:28)

Dear Tis_Bearself,

What a great experience for you! Thanks for the picture. As I watched the Mass at Fatima today on EWTN, the loveliest thing to me was watching the procession of the statue of Mary – very much like your picture. Mary almost seemed to be “walking” amidst the crowd. 🙂

Thank you for all your contributions to this thread!

Dear fide,

Thank you so much for defending our Mother Mary, and sharing God’s Truth with samsome. I hope he read your excellent response. Hopefully, others also have gained from reading your reply, and begin to “listen” more carefully to Scripture and to the Catechism of the Catholic Church concerning the unique place of Mary in God’s Plan.

Catholics, especially, need to regain the beautiful devotion to our Mother Mary which was given to the Church to share with the world. The Beloved Disciple John heard the words of Jesus from the Cross and recorded them that we might hear them deeply in our hearts as John did:
“Behold your Mother”
May we obey Jesus as John did and take Mary into our homes and into our lives.

Dear MarthaSo,

Thanks for your reply and for your willingness to learn more. I’m also grateful to Dan_Defender and Tis_Bearself for helping you with some links regarding Fatima and Apparitons in general…

A great way to learn more about The Catholic Faith is by reading “The Catechism of the Catholic Church” There is an online copy and I use it often, but it is far better to have your own copy so you can underline, etc. You can purchase the Large Green paperback 2nd Revised Edition at Amazon, See HERE

Dear Julian,

Thanks I read the article, and several other articles in trying to discern authenticity. I’m inclined to favor this Bishop’s assessment:
In April 1984, Bishop John Shojiro Ito of Niigata, the diocese in which Akita is located, was ready to retire. Before handing over the diocese to his successor, Bishop Ito published a letter regarding the Akita case, in which he declared that on four separate occasions he witnessed the statue of the Mary weeping. He stated that he had known Sister Agnes for 10 years. “She is a woman sound in spirit, frank and without problems,” Bishop Ito wrote. “She has always impressed me as a balanced person. Consequently, the messages she says that she has received did not appear to me to be in any way the result of imagination or hallucination.”
In this letter, Bishop Ito declared: “I recognize the supernatural character of a series of mysterious events concerning the statue of the Holy Mother Mary which is found in the convent of the Institute of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist at Yuzawadai, Soegawa, Akita. I do not find in these events any elements which are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. Consequently, I authorize, throughout the entire diocese, the veneration of the Holy Mother of Akita, while awaiting that the Holy See publishes definitive judgment on this matter.”
St. Faustina was not accepted at first but later her apparitions were approved. We may need to wait and see.

It was like a holy version of Times Square on New Years Eve!

Edited to add, I’m sure the May anniversary of the first apparition with Pope Francis canonizing the children was way more crowded even. I’m glad I spent that one in the US at the Fatima Shrine in NY.

That is a fantastic shot! I would get an enlargement of that and have it framed so I could look at it every day! Beautiful!

All comments on Fatima and that is great but few on Akita, I need to read more up on it. I have seen a few films on it.

Dear Victoria,

Yesterday was the 101st Anniversary of the last Apparition at Fatima, so it is not unusual that there were more comments on Fatima, and a few on Akita. Please be careful and prayerful in reading more on Akita and/or on apparitions in general – as I believe someone else on this thread has already mentioned.

Pope Benedict XVI in his homily at Fatima in 2010 said:
We would be mistaken to think that Fatima’s prophetic mission is complete. Here there takes on new life the plan of God which asks humanity from the beginning: “Where is your brother Abel […] Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground!” ( Gen 4:9). Mankind has succeeded in unleashing a cycle of death and terror, but failed in bringing it to an end… In sacred Scripture we often find that God seeks righteous men and women in order to save the city of man and he does the same here, in Fatima, when Our Lady asks: “Do you want to offer yourselves to God, to endure all the sufferings which he will send you, in an act of reparation for the sins by which he is offended and of supplication for the conversion of sinners?” ( Memoirs of Sister Lúcia , I, 162). – His full homily can be read HERE
Thanks again, Victoria for your contributions to this thread.

Akita is more recent at that. People should remember it. Few were here when Fatima occurred, some might have been here when Akita occurred.
The third message on October 13, 1973, the actual anniversary of the final visions and miracle of Fatima is as follows: "As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never have seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by my Son. Each day, recite the prayers of the Rosary. With the Rosary, pray for the Pope, the bishops and the priests. The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, and bishops against other bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their Confreres. The Church and altars will be vandalized. The Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.

“The demon will rage especially against souls consecrated to God. The thought of the loss of so many souls is the cause of my sadness. If sins increase in number and gravity, there will no longer be pardon for them.”

Fatima and Lourdes have been around long enough to be really well-established, had books written about them and movies made about them (“The Song of Bernadette” about Lourdes was a bestseller and a hit film). Also, Fatima and Lourdes have both been Vatican-approved. Akita is only bishop-approved, and to my knowledge has not received official Vatican recognition although some debate this.
The result is that the Akita apparition’s supernatural character is not in doubt, but that fewer people outside the local area will know about it and more people may be skeptical of it.

We have actually had three Vatican-recognized Marian apparitions since Fatima, and most people have not heard of them. Two were in Belgium (Beauraing, 1932 and Banneaux, 1933) and one in Rwanda (Kibeho, 1981). Apparently Belgium has not made it a priority to promote the two of them there, although there are shrines I guess.

I grew up hearing about Fatima constantly. My mother had a picture of it on the bedroom wall. I think it was the most popular and beloved of all the apparitions and just about every middle-aged to older Catholic lady read books on it and passed them around. There was a joke at the time of the JFK election that the third secret (which at that time had not been revealed) was opened by the pope and it said, “Vote for Kennedy.”

Akita is not approved. I always thought it was.

https://www.osv.com/RSS/365DaysToMe...ady-of-Akita-apparition-worthy-of-belief.aspx

One of my favorites is Our Lady of La Sallete and it is approved.

La Salette in particular is a beautiful place. I almost wonder if in the winter, they get snowed in. I’m wondering a bit off-topic I know. But it is, even from pictures you find on the web, is in a very remote area of the French Alps. I’ve even seen pictures where it does look largely “snowed” in and inaccessible in the winter. I don’t know if it is.

I have also read the book translated into English, of the Lourdes account that was contemporaneous to the life of St. Bernadette on this earth. That is truly fascinating. I don’t have it on me right at the moment. The English translation also made it to the US in the late 1800s as well (I want to say around 1876).

Akita is approved by the local bishop. That basically means it’s an approved apparition. Approvals are generally left up to him. Only a handful of apparitions get an official Vatican recognition. The Vatican has never said anything definitive about Akita.

I note that the OSV article you linked is from 2011. I believe it was in 2012 or 2013 that the Vatican published the official rules for approval of apparitions, which confirmed that Bishop Ito had the final say over it unless his successors decide something different. The cardinal who gave the OSV interview I don’t think was in a position to make that decision. Of course, he is free to not believe in Akita as no Catholic is required to believe in private revelation anyway, but it’s just his own opinion.
