For anyone who might be interested:

This event run by Church Music Association of America. They are a long-standing organization of Catholic musicians who promote sacred music in the liturgy.

Just thought I would promote this on CAF! It’s online through zoom, cost is $30.
" The Church Music Association of America is proud to invite you to join us in our first **Sacred Music Boot Camp** . Following on the success of our recent Virtual Colloquium and the feedback we received from participants, the CMAA is offering some of the basics of Sacred Music in our upcoming three- day program, again using the Zoom platform. This virtual program offers opportunities for learning, listening, and interacting with some of the best minds and musicians in the Catholic world today!
The CMAA Sacred Music Boot Camp will be primarily focused on instruction in topics related to chant and the Catholic sacred music tradition, lectures and daily night prayer. During the three days, you’ll be able to participate in all these sessions via your home computer using the Zoom app. At the end of each breakout session there will be a short question and answer session."

Can anyone do this? I’m interested but have no music background.

That’s a great question. It seems like anyone could benefit from it. When I read the attendee guide, it looks like the attendees will literally be listening, and have an opportunity to ask questions, but otherwise will be muted on zoom. So it will be similar to a lecture format. It does seem aimed at parish music directors, if that helps you decide whether it’s worth it for you.

Nor have I a musical background, but I joined a Gregorian schola back in 2002 and have been singing Gregorian chant ever since. In fact I’ve developed an expertise in Gregorian psalmody and now teach it to our schola (or did until the pandemic shut everything down).

So yes I think it’s well within your reach, and if you ask me, for a mere thirty bucks, how can you go wrong? It looks pretty basic so it seems like a good starting point from a very reputable organization.

I’m signing up now. Even just Night Prayer will be worth the thirty bucks. 😀

Out of personal interest, since I am not involved in music ministry, I attended the Sacred Music Boot Camp. I omitted only the last two sessions, the first because my computer went wonky, and the other because, realistically, knowing how to build a music program budget is something for which I would never have a use.

It was an enlightening experience. I learned quite a bit and the celebration of Compline each night was a very prayerful way to end each day’s sessions. There were sessions where I was way out of my depth, “How to Direct Chant” for example, but I learned something in each of them.
