Oct. 18 - St.Luke and St. Louis de Montfort

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Sunday’s Liturgy almost always takes precedence, as it does today, but we can see great similarities in the writings of St. Luke the Evangelist and St. Louis, the poor priest who loved Jesus through Mary and sought to spread the Good News of Christ by his preaching and writing as St. Luke did. Luke includes Mary especially in the beginning of his Gospel.

St. Luke in his Gospel and in the Acts of the Apostles shares all the Lord taught him and so St. Louis shares Jesus through Mary, for without Him they could do nothing. Sacred Scripture comes first and then we look at the Sacred Tradition of The Catholic Church and the Teaching Authority (of the Official Magisterium) to learn all the Truth the Holy Spirit was sent to bring to us.

1. What I say in an absolute sense of our Lord, I say in a relative sense of our Blessed Lady. Jesus, in choosing her as his inseparable associate in his life, glory and power in heaven and on earth, has given her by grace in his kingdom all the same rights and privileges that he possesses by nature. “All that belongs to God by nature belongs to Mary by grace”, say the saints, and, according to them, just as Jesus and Mary have the same will and the same power, they have also the same subjects, servants and slaves.
2. Following therefore the teaching of the saints and of many great men we can call ourselves, and become, the loving slaves of our Blessed Lady in order to become more perfect slaves of Jesus. Mary is the means our Lord chose to come to us and she is also the means we should choose to go to him, for she is not like other creatures who tend rather to lead us away from God than towards him, if we are over-attached to them. Mary’s strongest inclination is to unite us to Jesus, her Son, and her Son’s strongest wish is that we come to him through his Blessed Mother. He is pleased and honoured just as a king would be pleased and honoured if a citizen, wanting to become a better subject and slave of the king, made himself the slave of the queen. That is why the Fathers of the Church, and St. Bonaventure after them, assert that the Blessed Virgin is the way which leads to our Lord.

Come Holy Spirit, open the ears of our hearts to hear the Truth of Jesus, which you came to give us. Today, Oct. 18, the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist, let us learn to “Behold our Mother” in his beautiful account of the Annunciation especially but in every word of Scripture let us learn from You, Holy Sprit as Jesus promised you woul bring us all Truth.

May the Virgin Mary, who is the Mother of the Church, also be the Mother of “the Church of the home.” Thanks to her motherly aid, may each Christian family really become a “little Church” in which the mystery of the Church of Christ is mirrored and given new life. May she, the Handmaid of the Lord, be an example of humble and generous acceptance of the will of God. May she, the Sorrowful Mother at the foot of the Cross, comfort the sufferings and dry the tears of those in distress because of the difficulties of their families. Dear hazcompat,

Thanks so much, again for another excellent quote from Pope St. John Paul II. This pope has certainly encouraged the Church to a greater appreciation of St. Louis de Montfort’s work and words. Not only in this Pope’s writing but perhaps more by his daily living of his papal Motto: “Totus Tuus” (“Totally Yours”) words taken directly from St. Louis De Montfort’s treatise on “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin”

Dear Erundil,

Thanks so much for your “heart”, which let us know you liked what you read from St. Louis de Montfort. How good it is to hear another person join in love for Jesus through Mary! I hope you and others continue to read more Scripture as St. Louis de Montfort did before and after writing his treatise on True Devotion to Mary. I hope you read that little book too!

As all the Saints learned from Jesus, so must we continue listening to Jesus say from His Cross: “Behold Your Mother”.

Mary listened to all Jesus said and did, and pondered all in her heart!

And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. ( Gospel of Luke chapter 2:19)
