Octave of Easter

Solemnity- prolonging the feast of the Resurrection. One semi-mystical commentary describes the seven days as corresponding to the months and years. The Octave Day represents the mystical “eighth day” or eternity. The conclusion is that the mystery of the Resurrection is perpetual.

The prolongation of the Easter itself is seen throughout the Octave in the Traditional Missal. Every day the Gradual is “This is the day that the Lord has made” and (perhaps more explicitly) throughout the Octave in the preface is said “…to praise you at all times but especially this day when Christ our Pasch….”.

Prior to Vatican II there were a good amount of ocataves on the universal calendar. Now there are only two left, that of Christmas and that of Easter. Each day of the Easter Octave though is regarded as a solemnity, so there is no need for a Friday penance this week.
