My cousin and I were discussing souls in humans, whether we have one or not, and he said there was an octopus discovered by Russia that was smarter than the average human, and furthermore that humankind isn’t really something special. I heard there are also cases of monkeys, apes, and orangutans with similar traits. Could somebody refute this?

I googled it and found an article about some Russians finding a super smart octopus beneath Antarctica which they fought, and now claims that Putin is going to weaponize such creatures.

This author also penned articles like:

“Vatican steals Satan’s pitchfork”
“Noah’s Ark found in Antarctic ice”
“Texts from the dead”
“Wolf girl kept in sick human zoo”

He really should have stayed with the chimps

Most researchers really shy away from using the word “intelligent” when speaking about animals. Can apes, dolphins, dogs and certain species of octopus learn or “figure out” how to do certain things? Sure. Does that mean they are intelligent? 🤷

We have a hard enough time defining intelligence in term of humans. Trying to anthropomorphize animals is that much more difficult. When we have octopodes building matter transporters and diseminating their thoughts on the nature of quanta (in octal decimal of course :D) then maybe we can compare them to humans. Until that time we can simply say that certain creatures have abilities that are similar to humans, but cannot know what the basis of measure those abilities are.

Well, last I knew, octopi don’t follow the Kardashians. That’s something in their favor.

I’m laughing at my self on the inside. Then again, warrior Buddhist monks fighting demons in the military sound just as fanciful.

“Vatican steals Satan’s pitchfork”
I read part of that article, it’s quite funny. I especially like the part about “the early 1920s, when the world was at peace.”

Tell that to the Bolsheviks! (The Russian civil war lasted from 1917 to 1923 and ended with the communists in power over the largest country on earth.)

Could a creature be intelligent enough to have a multi-step thinking process like humans? Sure. In addition to squid/octopus, orcas, dolphins, and certain species of ape/dogs also seem to have these abilities. However, the difference is God made us specifically in His image with a soul.

Crows have multi step thinking ability, I have seen extensive studies and little tests they are given to see if they can complete multiple steps in order to reach a bit of food, this also included using a stick as a reaching tool, every crow they used passed every single test. It also found they can recognize faces for life, and even pass it on to their offspring, that is something humans cannot even do.

Interesting…I never thought of a crow as being smart.

:rotfl:

Indeed. And is this not the tip of the iceberg too - I mean how much further could we go here. In sum, intelligence would appear to be somewhat overrated for all the good it does or does not do us…😃
