What’s with every TV channel (English or Arabic) I switch on, I see it talking about how octopus paul prediction was 100% accurate in 2010 world cup!, they created a propaganda out of nothing.

The octopus overall prediction (2008 & 2010) is not 100% accurate as shown in the article below. Moreover, that octopus choice is based on 50/50 probability (since there are only 2 choices), if they really want to put that octopus to the test, then let them put all the 32 teams (3.1% probability) in the next world cup together in the same pool and see how is his prediction…

Yes, his record was not impeccable. He was 100% in predicting how his home country would fare in its matches in the World Cup. But is overall record is less stellar. I don’t think I would have bet my house based on his fortunetelling. :o

However, he has retired from the prediction business.

But…erm… I hope everyone realizes that the “psychic octopus” stories were all meant as humor.
 
I heard an interview with a mathematician who taught probability theory. He had students make up random strings and then flip coins to generate random strings. He said it was quite easy to pick out the student inventions versus the coin flips, because the coin flips would yield longer strings of all heads or all tails. Thus Octopus Paul could certainly randomly come up with a string of “predictions” that would match Germany’s wins. I understand that someone in Spain wants to pay big bucks for this creature. I would non-randomly sell that sucker in a heartbeat. After all, he isn’t the only octopus in the sea.

Apparently not everyone or this thread wouldn’t exist…😃

BTW other ‘oracles’ included Leon the porcupine, Petty the pygmy hippopotamus, Jimmy the Peruvian guinea-pig, Anton the tamarin and Mani the parakeet, but none of them had Paul the octopus’ excellent track record :rotfl:

But we’ll have to disagree about the plural form: I prefer octopuses or if I want to be really pedantic, octopodes. 😛

It was just coincidence that Paul “predicted” winners during the World Cup and something for people to have a laugh about. I never got the impression his predictions were meant to be taken seriously.🙂

Dear Brother,

The octopus Paul may not survive to 2014. Why don’t they try to make the prediction of the winner of the next Champion League winner, by putting every banner of the participating team. If Paul do not predict Real Madrid will be the winner, it will be nice to convert Paul to a delicate Sushi.
