I attended the baptism of my great-nephew yesterday. The pastor choose to perform it after the Mass so it was a separate ceremony.
He was a very nice priest but throughout the ceremony he would apologize and make depracating statements like “Here’s another long prayer” or “I know this takes a long time” and then just before he poured the water he said “OK get ready for the screaming” and other odd jokes and comments.
I consider both of our families to be devout catholics and we knew the responses and all. None of us were in a hurry and no one was complaining in the least.
Afterwards we talked of course and most of us thought his comments trivialized the ceremony and were inappropriate. I’m not sure what to do at this point as we were at a church I’m not familiar with and I do not know the priest personnaly.
Just thought it very odd.
