I got a penance once that was something like “Be the person that God wants you to be.” I prayed to that effect for a little bit after I got the penance. I have been to confession many times since. Does this mean that if I ever sin, I am violating that penance, or am I overthinking things?

I think youi’re overthinking things. There’s really no such thing as violating penance.

God Bless

I think he meant you should join the army “Be all that you can be…'cuz we need you, in the Arrrrrrrrrrmy” 😉

Fuggetaboutit. You’re overthinking. Relax. 👍

No, you are not sinning if you do not keep this penance. Remember, each time you go to confession, you receive a different penance. If you did not understand the priest, you should have asked him. But that penance he gave yuou was just for that confession. When you go again, you will receive another penance.
Just forget it and don’t dwell on it.

Everytime that you visit Christ in the confessional you are “being who God wants you to be”. So my take on this is that you can only “void” your penance (so to speak) when you give up on yourself and the mercy of God…teachccd 🙂
