In some video games, you can play as female characters or a guy character.

If you’re a guy and you choose to play a girl (or vice versa), is that sinful?

What about when you play online (and the gender doesn’t make a difference, but for strategy). An example of this would be Super Smash Bros. Some female charcters are better than male ones or fantasy creatures (in my opinion). Is it a sin to play as Princess Peach if you’re a guy? Or Mario, a guy, if you’re a girl?

Just something I’d like to be clarified.

Oops. Forgot to say. Is this cross dressing?

And also, what if you eat meat in a game on a Friday? I’m guessing it doesn’t matter…

No its not. Cross dressing isn’t a sin either.

Pretending to be a female and having relations with a guy (online) on the game would be sinful… but playing a female character definitely isn’t.

No, it’s not cross dressing.

Commander Shepard’s female voice actor is so superior to male Shepard’s voice actor that if anything is going to be declared wrong it should be clinging to a same gendered character and denying yourself a better overall experience in the Mass Effect series.

Oh, and if you are going to worry about actions like “Cross-dressing” and eating meat on friday in a video game then where are the questions about walking into peoples houses and searching their cabinets for items to steal or killing people without trying to come to peaceful resolutions first?

A male playing a female in an online game is no more sinful than a male playing the top hat in Monopoly

Very true, but I would like to submit that allowing your family dog to play the top hat should be considered gravely disordered at the very least.

Jennifer Hale did a better job than Mark Meer in some respects, but I didn’t feel like her performance was up to par with her past work. I’ve heard her with many different dialects of the English language, but I think an American accent just isn’t her strong suit. She was fantastic in KotOR. 🙂

Good point in your second paragraph, by the way. Worrying about your character’s sex seems very minor compared to killing people and looting (Bethesda) and all the other morally gray areas into which some games put you (BioWare).

No.

Playing as an opposite sex characted in a game does not mean that a man wants to be a woman or to cross-dress.

Personally I usually play male characters, but sometimes I play as both is the perspective of the game changes (like in Kotor 2), and enjoy all whata game has to offer.

Also what happens in a game… is often a game. A fantasy, not a ‘lifestyle choice’. Playing as a character of the opposite sex, hence, does not mean one person is homosexual or a cross-dresser.

This goes for violence as well.
I played COD4:MW, I liked it… but I’d never join the USMC or the SAS and go sniping people off.
I used to play Carmageddon as well, back in the day… and even if running over pixelated pedestrians is fun, I would never consider running over people in real life.

Although some games are morally questionable (like pornographic games) I doubt games will make you a cross-dresser or a murderer.

IMNAAHO. This is no more “wrong” than somebody male playing a female role in the drama (which was done universally in Shakesperean times) or, for that matter, taking on a female character for a costume party.

Now, if body-sensory interface were to progress so far as to allow “cybersex” with body sensation; the theoretical possibility of sin might emerge in gender-related gaming.

ICXC NIKA.

That is a really creepy mental image. Thanks for putting it there. Suddenly I went from dreaming of good mental interfaces showing up in the next 20 years to hoping they don’t appear till well outside my lifetime.

I’d still like to see them happen. The good they could do far outstrips the potential for sin.

Imagine somebody like Tony Melendez receiving mechanical hands that really feel “handy.” Or robots with augmented sense-interfaces that allow a human controller to perform tasks in hazardous environments (such as the Japanese reactors?) without the need to risk his neck.

Technology is morally neutral. Sin resides in our inmost being, not in our hands, or in anything they can make.

God Bless and ICXC NIKA.

No.

I personally don’t like the idea though but that’s my personal tastes. :o I prefer my avatars to reflect my true innermost self. 😛 (magically blows up orc village Gyaaaahahahah! Die! Die! Die! Fear the Warlock’s power! The Ancient Magic of Jotunheim!!)

On the other hand, I do agree with Ismael up there in that playing the opposite gender can help see things in a different perspective. Playing original female characters actually gives me good ideas when creating fictional ones in my own stories.

You’ll never see me having a female as my main though. Nevar! DX

No its not. Cross dressing isn’t a sin either.
“The apparel of a man shall not be on a woman, neither shall a man put on a woman’s dress; for every one that does these things is an abomination to the Lord thy God” (Deuteronomy 22:5)

If you are playing an online game I think it especially important to be cautious not to play a female, as you might deceive someone into thinking you are one in real life and thereby accidentally lead them into sin whether you intend to do so or not.

First off, not all games that let you choose your character’s gender are online.
Secondly, it is generally a netiquette rule of thumb to not always instantly believe the gender stated on an internet profile (be it an avatar or a Facebook page).

If someone were to be actually deceived, it’ll be their fault, not the players.

Remember, des es da INTERWEBZ! 😛

There are several games where either the protagonist is a female and you are therefore forced into playing the game as a female (Tomb Raider and Perfect Dark come to mind).

There are also games where you need to play as both male and female characters depending on the current storyline of the game (Resident Evil comes to mind).

In fact although I have never played it, wasn’t there a game years back mocking this situation where you go the whole game thinking the protagonist is a male but then it turns out she is actually a female (for some reason I am thinking it might be Metro, although I have never played the game).

The only problem I can see is the game of Tomb Raider might be an occasion for sin for some people who lust over Lara Croft. Even if just a video game character that would still be sinful.

Well Deut. tells us to stone homosexuals but we don’t follow that… why should we follow this?

This doesn’t seem to be a moral law. A man who dresses like a woman for a play is not sinning against the Lord, though I’m open to hearing why he is.
