I didn’t learn about the murder of some 20,000 Albigensians under the orders of Pope Innocent the III from the LDS Church. For starters.

Would you rather be a black under the priesthood ban or a heretic under PI III?
Outerspace - Where did you learn about the murder of some 20,000 Albigensians??? I have never even heard of it until you brought it up.

Please start a thread about your questions. It is not too early!

You sure you wanna get into that aspect? We can talk about MMM. We can talk about Missouri. Trust me…there is a lot of blood on both sides…the only reason there is less blood on LDS hands is because they only come to being in 1800s.

We are much better off talking about doctrine.

Perhaps you are right at the end of the day …

But, looking at person conduct however, …Mormons have to examine the contradictions of Joseph Smith including but not limited to his personal behavior. The personal conduct below raises all kinds of issues on his credibility … why should anyone believe him given that he :
  • Was a Polygamist (against the law)…~34 wives including 2 14 year olds
  • Adultery with ~14 wives?
  • Sold Miracle Oil as a health claim
  • Claimed that he can find water underground
  • Claimed that he can find buried treasure
What to add any?

🤷

We sure can. The problem is there is little to talk about. MMM was not a directive to kill heretics, it was a fog of war mistake where BY may have at worse covered up for some criminals against a government he held suspect, for good reason. That’s the worst case.

We can contrast that with the wanton slaughter of tens of thousands of innocent people as long as you want, and that’s before we get into anything truly pukeworthy.

Yes, we can talk about Missouri, and the defensive acts the LDS had to take as it was driven from state to state and eventually out of the country, leaving it’s murdered people in the ground as it left, let alone ransacked properties behind.

I’d be happy contrast that with murdered Cathars, all day long.
the only reason there is less blood on LDS hands is because they only come to being in 1800s.
That is a slanderous McCarthyistic statement, to hold someone accountable for actions they simply did not do. That is a wrong thing to do.
We are much better off talking about doctrine.
It’s understandable you might feel that way. Personally, I couldn’t carry water for a Church with the blood of millions of innocent people on it’s hands, before we even get to the doctrine which is nearly as troubled.

Why is this “going there”? Imagine the LDS Church never existed. How could you possible defend this activity? The murderous popes, the suppressions, the torture, the multiple Crusades, the Inquisitions.

Forget me, forget the LDS Church. How is this remotely defensible?

I would much rather defend any such claims against Joseph Smith than the atrocities committed by Papal decree and oversight. All day long every day.

This is my new favorite:

(from An Insider’s View of Mormon Origins)

he [Joseph] saw Captain Kidd [the pirate] sailing on the Susquehanna River during a freshet, and that he buried two pots of gold and silver. He claimed he saw writing cut on the rocks in an unknown language telling where Kidd buried it, and he translated it through his peepstone… [and] dug for Kidd’s money, on the west bank of the Susquehanna, half a mile from the river… Jo became known all over New York and Pennsylvania. Sometimes his brothers were with him…Jo and his father were all the time telling of hidden things, lead, silver, and gold mines which he could see.

I see some post were deleted, so I edited my response to take it out completly
