I am possibly considering joining Catholicism or the Eastern Orthodoxy but I am having trouble reconciling a big issue. There is no doubt in my mind that there is a God and God is Trinitarian as described in the Athanasian Creed because of an experience I had but I am having an issue reconciling something keeps me from being in communion with the Church. It is one of the defining features of Gnosticism and that is the distinction between God and creator. I recognize that this creator cannot do anything without God and may resemble God but I cannot say that this creator is God with all honesty.

Any help with overcoming this or rationalizing this dilemma?

Could you explain your reasons for thinking that God cannot be the creator? Is this because of the imperfection of creation, which in neo-Platonic thought implies that it cannot procede directly from the One? Or… what?

If this creator cannot do anything without God and may resemble God it derives its power from God and is presumably created by God - in which case why did God not create everything else? Perhaps it would conceivably be inconsistent with divine transcendence but it would imply that God is not concerned with human affairs and does not love us as a Father - even though Jesus taught us to pray to “Our Father”…

The alternative is to believe that the creator has existed with God eternally. But that would go against the principle of economy - which is a sufficient reason for rejecting the theory unless you can explain why you “cannot say that this creator is God with all honesty”.

Jesus seems to believe that the Father is the creator. He pointed out that the hairs of our head are all numbered, which would indicate that He who created us knows us well.
I will take Jesus’ word for it, since He appears to have had a direct line to truth. Besides, as tonyrey notes, it violates Occam’s razor, why postulate unnecessary explanations?
