Odd reactions to Marian devotion during discernment

Some of the more modernist clergy don’t like traditional things such as rosaries and scapulars or even Marian devotion.
This is the same affront I received when I was in the seminary in the 90’s. There were some who prayed the rosary openly and had a devotion to Mary. There were many who did not have a devotion to Mary and they were offended by it. I always, told it like it is and did my own thing. You have to find a spiritual director who is devoted to Mary as well as other seminarians who are devoted to Mary.
I was always criticized for reading holy books written by the saints. Some would say things like, “So, you are reading your How to be a saint book.” You will encounter darkness in the seminary and the priesthood. We know who triumphs in the end.

I guess I was hoping for someone to give me a more positive explanation.
Sorry, but I don’t think this exists. I have heard priests advise seminarians, “Keep your mouth shut and your head down,” meaning, just try to fit in and bring no attention to yourself, good or bad. Keep devotions private because they are enough to brand you.
