Of What Does Your Prayer Consist?

I know the following will sound naive and stupid…

But there are various prayers for consecration of oneself to God, the Holy Virgin, etc.

In the back of my mind, I’m like…But didn’t I already consecrate myself to ______ ? Can I consecrate to _________ now?

I’m probably just thinking too literally…
 
  • I often do a short daily prayer to each; Our Father, Holy Spirit, and Jesus Christ.
  • Novena at times, generally to Our Lady of Perpetial Help.
  • I try to pray the Rosary daily. I do a few decades though I recently started the 54-Day Rosary Novena.
  • I have a moderately dangerous job so I say a prayer to my Guardian Angel, and ask the intercession of Saint Joseph and Saint Anthony whenever I begin work.
  • Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel whenever I feel tormented.
  • Prayer to Saint Francis De Sales, whenever I need to write for a side hobby and to Saint Catherine De Bologna whenever I work on my art.
  • Prayer of Thanksgiving at the end of the day.
  • 3 Hail Mary’s before I sleep to someone who needs my prayers, or to someone who hurt me in the past, sometimes for someone completely random or a soul in purgatory.

I bet Fr. Mike can say the rosary in 7 minutes. 🤷‍♂️ Ok, he did slow down. Great talk! I’ve recently been reading the sections on Prayer in the catechism that he is referring to- really is very good! Great priest!

As he quotes, “Prayer is both a gift of grace and a determined response on our part. It always presupposes effort.”

Like others my daily prayers vary from the Our Father, petitions, thanks and a chat. As we are in November I may pray the Chaplet for Holy Souls during the week or the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. I am not a fast prayer - I even find the mass too fast but I doubt my fellow parishioners would like it extended by a further hour as we think on each word or sentence and follow every punctuation properly. I am just thankful that in emergencies God answers my prayers before I get the first word or sentence out.

I vary what I do…

It all depends on my mood, I guess you could say.

Sometimes I’ll pray Novenas. Sometimes a Rosary or some type of a Chaplet.

Sometimes a Litany or Litanies. Sometimes a formulaic prayer.

Many times it’s just a conversation that I’ll have with God or a saint or saints, or with my Guardian Angel, or I’ll pray a spontaneous prayer for others, and ask God or the members of the Heavenly Kingdom to intercede for those whom I love. 🙂
 
Every morning I pray the following:

Heavenly Father, Lord God Almighty:
Thank you for this beautiful day. Thank you for the sunshine. Thank you for the fog, and thank you for the rain that you send our way. Thank you for clean air and clean water. Thank you for the garden. Thank you for the birds and all the animals - especially our kitty Diamond. Thank you, Lord, for life.

Thank you, Father, for my husband and for our families. Thank you for our children and our grandchildren. Thank you for our parents and our grandparents. Thank you for my sisters. Please help me, Lord, to be kind and generous and loving to every member of my family and my husband’s family.

In the evening I pray the rosary asking the Holy Mother to pray for my intentions having to do primarily with the physical and spiritual health of family and friends. One of my grandsons (who was four at the time) suggested that we pray “for all the babies in the world.” At the time I was concerned about an acquaintance’s baby who was failing to thrive. Since my grandson’s suggestion, I have included in my rosary “all the babies in the world” who are failing to thrive. Ironic to me is that in teaching my grandson to pray, he taught me a prayer.

Here is RSV version. “Bible, Revised Standard Version” I have heard Professor James Charlesworth talk about this prayer. I am particularly impressed with “I bend the knee of my heart”. According to Charlesworth, this is a Jewish prayer. I think it is very beautiful.
 
Formal prayer is Night Prayer before bed.

A rosary or two during the day, mental and uttered extemporaneous prayers during the day.

I’ve found Fr Dubay’s work to be so much help, also Fr Phillipe’s “Time for God” and just found on FORMED Peter Kreeft’s “Prayer for Beginners”.

It isn’t like heretical. It actually appears in the Liturgy of the Hours. It’s Canon is Orthodox Churches. I believe it appears in the Book of Odes in most Orthodox Bibles.
Never really understood why the Prayer didn’t acquire canonical status in the Latin rite. I think it’s beautiful as well.
 
Daily Rosary, daily Divine Mercy Chaplet, and daily free-form prayer with the following elements:
  • praise
  • thanksgiving
  • petitions
  • offering up of suffering
  • “thy will be done”
 
I prefer meditation. It’s hard to master but I love the peace I feel. I also like chaplets.
 
I need to work on the Praise part, I’m never really sure how to go about doing it. Will have to look into it and think on it more.
 
It seems to me the most challenging component of prayer is the listening aspect.

God, here I am and here are all my problems. You take me and do what You want with me!

Liturgy of the Hours. Covers pretty much everything, plus the added benefit of offering up the Prayer of the Church.
