I was recently in a chapel where the sanctuary (altar, tabernacle, etc.) are slightly off-center (looking “out” from the altar, the sanctuary is slightly to the right of the center aisle). I have seen this before and I think the explanation I heard was that it reflects the head of Christ tilted to his right on a crucifix… And it makes more sense with cathedrals that were cruciform… Anyone else know anything about this?
