Dear all;

Just a basic question here. I wondered how you go about offering things up?

I work alone, and during the day when I am doing certain tasks, I’d like to be able to offer them up for something meaningful, redemptive, or for my wife.

But, I always struggle with the formula and don’t feel I have done it properly?

Is it as simple as ‘I offer this up for…’?

Thanks,

I don’t think there’s any “magic formula” or anything like that. What you have suggested seems sufficient. The important thing is that you are being deliberate about it and calling those intentions specifically to mind.

if say i am doing the dishes, i will sometimes just say “for ‘so and so’” and when i do something else like put away clothes i’ll say “for the conversion of sinners” 🙂 i try to keep it simple 🙂

I found this on OurCatholicPrayers.com and have used it at times:
We start first with this well-known prayer Our Lady taught the three Fatima visionaries, the children Lucia Dos Santos, and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, in 1917, to be said when offering up sufferings, sacrifices, or penances:
Oh my Jesus, I offer this for love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
As the other have said, there is no “right” way, but this prayer helps me focus my intentions.

How about saying something like Lord, I unite this suffering with your suffering on the cross for the benefit of my Mom, Dad, Daughter, wife, etc.

Offer up your well done work, perhaps a period of intense focus on your work…for friends who have asked for prayers, for all unborn children and their mothers, for all families, for the lonely divorced, for struggling fathers, for the addicted, for your parish priests, for seminarians, for your coworkers, for your boss, family. For all atheists, for the people you will run across that day. For the faithfully departed.

A priest I know says “be bold and daring in your petition…offer your work for all the souls in China!”

While you offer up your suffering/sacrifice you must know that you are offering it up in union with the merit of the sufferings of Jesus Christ in Gethsemane and on Calvary; even if you only say: Lord, I offer this up for… you must implicitly unite it to Christ’s sufferings

God bless you.

If it’s a day-to-day thing like work, chores, the occasional migraine, etc., I’ll say a short, “Dear Lord, I offer this up for…” There are a couple recurring/chronic things that I chose to offer up for specific people/things a while back. I’ll occasionally say a reminder prayer about those, more for my benefit than anything else. I also make a point of telling my kids anytime they complain about something to offer it up. As you can imagine, they absolutely love hearing this and never roll their eyes, yell at me to stop it or then plead with my wife to get me to stop.

Along with offering my efforts, etc. I also offer Him my failings as well. Although I take responsibility for my sins and failings, I also know that I am to give Him ALL. And ya never know, Jesus could take those messes and make them into beautiful fertilizer 😃

If you read the diary of St. Faustina, Jesus tells her to give Him her misery.

He says this because her misery is one aspect that is entirely hers.
