Offering your penance

For my penance, I was told to say it also for the sick and dying. How do I do that? Do say “I also say my penance for the sick and dying” before I start my penance?

That’s odd. I can see saying prayers for the Holy Father’s intention, but why for State intention? Isn’t that a violation of the Establishment clause?

I believe what is meant by state intention is that you state (announce) the intention you want to pray for.
