Could someone let me know if it’s weird that my 1961/2 Breviarium Romanum (original) doesn’t have the Officium Defunctorum in it? It’s in the index as a fol. sep. but when I bought it (on eBay) that’s not in.

However, my “learn the new breviary” says it’s in the breviary after the Common of Saints…

I would contact the publisher if it’s a new edition – or does it actually date from the '60s?

Unless I’m badly mistaken, wouldn’t it basically be the same as on 2 November?

Probably similar, but not necessarily identical: something tells me there may be variations in the Office depending on whether the deceast was male or female.

I don’t have my copy at hand so I can’t check it at present, but it sound as though you are missing a folio.

If it helps, the Breviary was printed in Belgium by H. Dessain in 1962. It has “Quod a nobis” and “Divino afflato and Rubricarum instructum” at the front.

In the index, “VI. Index Communis Sanctorum et partium subsequentium”, it was everything up to “Officium S. Mariae in Sabbato” in rounded brackets ( ), then:

Officium parvum B.M.V. fol. sep.
Officium Defunctorum fol. sep.
Psalmi graduales fol. sep.
Septem psalmi poenitentiales fol sep.

then continues with the Litaniae Sanctorum, which is in the breviary…

Why would what’s missing be from the middle of the book? And, like I said, was the Officium Defunctorum not part of the breviary??

I suspect that the items noted as fol. sep. were printed separately, either as inserts or as separate volumes. The Officium Parvum BVM, e.g., is not part of the Divine Office, and so was always a separate volume. (As I said earlier, I don’t currently have access to my (admittedly uncatalogued) library, but I believe I have one somewhere there.) Now, whereas the Officium Defunctorum could be considered a part, it is only used in certain circumstances. I could be mistaken, but I don’t recall having a separate volume, nor do I recall that it is actually included in the Breviarium Romanum. Sorry that I can’t be more helpful.
