My wife and I have been doing the LOTH (Office of Readings only) for a bit over a year. I have been learning as we go with the help of a book called Discovering Prayer and people on this forum.

We have the four volume set of LOTH and all four volumes contain the Office of the Dead even though it is only proper on Nov 2. There is, in the GI of the LOTH. and vague reference to in 245 to votive offices but there is no where that I have found a direct reference to the Office of the Dead in the Instruction.

Does anyone know when (other than Nov 2) the Office of the Dead can be read?

Pretty sure whenever someone has died, or anniversary of a death.

@oralabora is your go-to guy for questions like this. For myself, I use the Office of the Dead for times like the anniversary of someone’s death or anytime I particularly want to pray for the dead.

Typically, at the death of someone close to you (family, friend, clergy) or of significance in your community, and at the anniversary date of the death of someone close to you. You can say it on the day of their death or the day you learn of their death or the day of their funeral on dates not otherwise interdicted for the Office of the Dead. You can say it more than once for the same person, say on the day you learned of their passing and the day of their funeral.

Of course the last intercession at Vespers is also always for the dead, which is what I use for general acquaintances who pass. For someone close though, I pray the Office of the Dead.

And you can as Suscipe says, pray it any time a votive office is allowed, when you want to pray for the dead, though November 2 typically covers that, but for personal reasons you may want to say the Office for the Dead for, say all deceased family members or some other intention.

Thank you all for the answers. I have been doing it pretty much the way described but I wanted to make sure that was not wrong.
