Office of the Hours

Hello,

I am new to the traditionalist Catholic movement (discovered SSPX last autumn), and I am very intrigued.

So, I have the post-Vatican II Office of the Hours 4-volume set… I am wondering what the appropriate parallel would be for traditionalist Catholicism? Is it a missal or a breviary?

In the EF it is the 1962 Brevarium Romanum. It was published in 1961, so some copies might be instead labeled 1961. The difference is that there are 4 daytime hours instead of 3 and you do all the psalms in a week, not a month, so Lauds & Vespers have 5 psalms each and Matins usually has 9, but less on certain occasions.

The Brevarium Romanum is the whole thing and is 2 or 3 volumes depending on whether or not it has the English translation side-by-side. The Diurnale Romanum has all the daytime hours in one book (so all the hours except Matins-equivalent to “Christian Prayer”). The Liber Usualis has the Mass & Office for Sundays and Holy Days, with the melodies for the chants. All these books are readily available on the Internet in Latin only versions. Publishers are still working on bilingual editions, which should be out later this year from what I hear. Musicasacra.com has a Latin-English Diurnale as a pdf and divinumofficium.com has the full office (Latin-English) in html format and officiumdivinum.org has it Latin only.
