Office of Worship salary

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this (so moderators, feel free to move it), but we are currently looking at the salaries of Diocesan Directors of the Office of Worship.

Do any of you know the common salary range for this position? Or know where I could find it?

The only thing I can think of is something like monster jobs…some internet salary comparison tool. I DOUBT you would find a list of actual salaries for certain people or positions unless you happen to work for the diocese in the department that is concerned with salaries. This is that same as saying I want to find a list of what all the managers for company X make. Any company that published that info would probably not keep its employees very long.

I guess it would depend if the person holding the position was a priest, a religious, a deacon or lay person.

It might also depend on whether the position is considered full or part time.

Are the salaries of Diocesan personnel kept secret from the parishioner who pay them? An interesting concept, having spent years in municipal government, where everything is public record.

Many people have the misconseption that they have the right to know salaries of church employees. They do not. It is not the public government where you are forced to pay taxes to support public government. It is more like a private corporation [in fact the average parish IS a corporation, with the pastor as head (I can’t recall if he is the president officially)] and you voluntarily give them your money. The people that work for the church are private employees, and they have a right to privacy as far as their salaries are concerned.

For whatever it’s worth, one of the books on Pope Benedict XVI, I believe it’s “Servant of the Truth”, listed his salary, when he served as Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Fatih, at the equivalent of $1,200 a month.

Closer to home, our pastors make $1,400 a month while the parochial vicars make slightly less. So, if a priest were to serve as the director of divine worship for his diocese, that might be in addition to his pastoral duties as either rector, pastor or parochial vicar of the individual church to which he is assigned. The diocese would then configure the amount on the basis of his responsibility to the particular offices he held.

Now, if the director were from a religious order, there are some orders who would require that the salary be given to the community, as communal property, meaning that the nun or brother would not have the money for his or her own personal use. It goes to the house, so to speak. The brothers at our local priory share everything in common, so when one of them celebrates Mass, the stipend is made out to the priory rather than to the individual priest. Ditto for those who also teach at our local community college and university.

The lay diocesan directors make anywhere from $36,000 to $40,000 depending on education and experience. I couldn’t tell you how much our bishop makes because that’s not public knowledge. What I do think is that the diocese pays for his house and other incidentals.
