I was thinking about Apostolic Succession the other day and the question that popped into mind was:
**
“If Peter’ successor is Benedict XVI and the current holder of the throne of Saint Mark is Shenouda III, who currently holds the positions as official successors to the other Apostles like Andrew and Matthew, and where are they located?”**

This question intrigued me because if it could be shown that there are official offices in existence that held authority handed down by the Apostles themselves, it would be strong proof in favor of succession.

If anyone could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Armenia apparently had both St Thaddeus and St Bartholomew as their head Bishop. St Thomas is thought to have founded the Indian Churches. St John possibly Ephesus and St Andrew possibly Constantinople. St James the Just Jerusalem. Beyond that not sure, though how true all that is (besides St James in Jerusalem which is certain) I don’t know

Antioch was founded by St. Peter. St. Mark was not an apostle, he was a bishop ordained by St. Peter. St. Paul founded the church in Corinth.

That kind of narrows down the list doesn’t it? So what I’m getting is that the Apostles really didn’t hold offices. All they did was found churches and leave them to the people they trust.

Dear brother PinoyCatholic,

Yes, the Apostles had an “office.” An “office” simply denotes “responsibility.” The Apostles had specific responsibilities (or “offices”) to the Church which they handed on to bishops. One, in particular, St. Peter, had greater responsibilities than the other Apostles.

The responsibility of the Apostles was handed down to the bishops - who in turn allow priests and deacons to share in the apostolic ministry that is properly the bishops’. The particular responsibilities of St. Peter not merely as Apostle, but as head of the Choir of Apostles, was handed down to his successor in Rome.
