My 9th-grade class asked me about this. Let me point out that it seems that logcially the Church teachings would prohibit gay adoption in principle, but is there an actual official Church ruling, directive or something that specifically forbids homosexuals from adopting? Please note that I am merely trying to establish this fact and not looking for a debate here.

Also, what is Catholic teaching on adoption by unmarried, widowed singles and such?

Thanks,

Scott

Homosexual relationships are forbidden, but there is no ruling that in every conceivable circumstance a homosexual couple are committing a further sin if they adopt a child.

Commonsense, which the British government seems to have lost, tells us that a homosexual relationship is not an appropriate environment in which to bring up a child. The bishops have said that, if the government persists in insisting that homosexual adopters be treated equally to all other prospective adoptive parents, they will not co-operate, partly because of the interests of the children, partly because it is gesture aimed at normalising homosexual conduct in the public mind.

You could easily argue that the wrong precedent was set by allowing cohabiting couples to adopt. As far as widowed, elderly, impoverished and other adopters are concerned, there are of course many other people who are poor choices as adoptive parents for reasons which have nothing to do with morals.

As experience has shown, the absence of sexual complementarity in these unions creates obstacles in the normal development of children who would be placed in the care of such persons. They would be deprived of the experience of either fatherhood or motherhood. Allowing children to be adopted by persons living in such unions would actually mean doing violence to these children, in the sense that their condition of dependency would be used to place them in an environment that is not conducive to their full human development. This is gravely immoral…

Thanks fix and tee, exactly what I needed. I was aware of that document but did not know it mentioned adoption specifically.

Anything specific regarding non-married people and adoption?

Scott
