“We claim that killing a newborn could be ethically permissible in all the circumstances where abortion would be. Such circumstances include cases where the newborn has the potential to have an (at least) acceptable life, but the well-being of the family is at risk,” the article reads. “We propose to call this practice ‘after-birth abortion,’ rather than ‘infanticide,’ to emphasise that the moral status of the individual killed is comparable with that of a fetus (on which ‘abortions’ in the traditional sense are performed) rather than to that of a child.”

That’s the standard mechanic of asking for a finger and later claiming the entire hand, so to “translate” a Polish idiom. People just push borders. If you yield any, they eventually ask you to yield further until they’ve gained it all. Small steps can carry us a long way, unfortunately.

Its just awful to realise that some people actually think in such a warped way. Feeling in a surprisingly charitable mood today, I am praying that they will see the error of their ways and repent of their anti-life viewpoints. :gopray2:

This article, and those like it, have been making the rounds on the internet. What infuriates me, is that I agree with the basic point, that infanticide is ethically the same as abortion, but they use this as an excuse to commit infanticide, and not to argue against the evils of abortion. Honestly, if I didn’t know better I would think this was along the lines of Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal”, but this is meant to be taken seriously. It’s sad that society has come to this.

This is a blog from March and we had several threads about the original journal article when it first came out.

I read some interviews with the writers of the journal article. They weren’t proposing infanticide as much as following a philosophical line of reasoning. If abortion is a valid moral choice for reasons that range from poverty to inconvenience, is it not also logical that the same end of life decision could be made after birth. In other words, what is it about going through the birth canal that changes the act into one we find morally reprehensible?

From the linked article.
Is this a pro-choice manifesto, carried to the ultimate, logical conclusion, considering children not their own unique selves but something and someone not quite human?
Or could it be its subversive opposite, the best pro-life argument anyone could imagine, exposing the darkest, selfish reasoning at the end of what seems the sensible point that a “woman is in control of her own body”?

Children are growing up hearing this kind of talk and many will learn there is nothing wrong with it. It is disgusting. The gay agenda was pushed the same way and now is accepted by almost everyone on tv and in the media.
Haven’t these doctors ever heard of adoption?

It is the logical extension of abortion. The statement “that killing a newborn could be ethically permissible in all the circumstances where abortion would be” makes an awful lot of sense - we can but hope that some of the pro abortion crowd who are still sane enough to realize that murdering a child who has been born is a bad thing realize this and realize what they are supporting.

These aren’t medical doctors. They are bioethicists who wrote an article for an academic journal. It is very unlikely that any children are reading the Journal of Medical Ethics.

I agree 100% with that statement.

A logical statement that is equivalent to the first quoted sentence would be:

If abortion would be ethically permissible then killing a newborn could be ethically permissible.

The contra-positive (which is logically the same) is as follows:

If killing a newborn could not be ethically permissible then abortion would not be ethically permissible.

I think that’s what he actually meant.😉

Singer even goes as far as saying some animals should be considered “persons” because of their high level of consciousness and thought. Makes me think of my pug, who under Singer’s proposal would have full human rights, such as the right to free speech, bear arms, due process, representation, vote, etc. It’s laughable, but what else would you expect from a pantheist? Whereas a fetus, down syndrome baby, a person in vegetative states, elderly with dementia/Alzheimer’s, etc. would not be considered “persons” and should not be expected to have full rights, or any rights. With that said, he advocates infanticide up to 30 days after birth to give parents the choice of exterminating their child if he/she has some undesirable defect. It would actually be funny, if only a few believed as he does, but more and more are signing on to this way of thought.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A5C6ROSYHHIFL?ie=UTF8&sort_by=MostRecentReview
The so-called “right to choose” has led to the destruction of over 50 million unborn and has led to such practices as the “Two Minus One Pregnancy” visionandvalues.org/2011/08/abortion-s-slippery-slope-the-two-minus-one-pregnancy, the practice of aborting one twin by injecting potassium chloride into its heart. When asked which one to abort, the woman typically asks the doctor to “use some kind of chance procedure to pick the winner and loser, so she doesn’t have to. In such cases, it is usually the one who unfortunately finds itself closer to the needle.”

Indeed. It is the logical conclusion of saying that abortion is morally okay. Philosphers like Peter Singer have been saying that for years and years.

As truly atrocious as this is, I have to respect that they are at least logically consistent. Most people who support abortion view the issue emotionally. ('Before the fetus is born, it doesn’t feel like a person, so it doesn’t seem so bad.")

Of course, missing from the equation is the common sense that killing babies is about as bad as it gets.
