Oh say, can you ski

Anyone like to ski?

I used to do it almost every winter. Due to my disability I use a “mono-ski” – see the picture below from 2007. I have plans to go next weekend (Feb 2/3) for the first time in 9 years.

You are braver than me and a lot of other people to go skiing!

I hope you have a great time!

Well I hope you stay healthy too! Have a safe time when you go!

I love to ski. Will probably go when the Super Bowl airs (don’t worry, I will catch the game later, but Super Bowl Sunday is the best day to go because the slopes are generally empty).

Part of the reason I settled on that weekend when it became clear my original date wasn’t going to work out 🙂

The adaptive program offers a package of three two-hour sessions with an instructor; I plan to ski Saturday morning and afternoon, and then Sunday afternoon. (Want to make sure I can get to Mass either late Saturday afternoon, or Sunday morning.)

That’s cool.

I failed at skiing. 😞 Couldn’t let myself go. It was a brutal walk down the hill.

On a happier note, an old guy at church rigged himself up an awesome!! walker on skis. Parked it outside in a snow bank. 😁

I went to college in Denver, Colorado.
I grew up on the plains. I tried skiing, but
did not really enjoy it. I am more of a warm weather sports person. It was pretty up on the snow covered Rocky
Mountains, but I found out if you can’t control your speed, skiing can be dangerous.
I hope you have fun and enjoy your trip.

Yes, speed control is important.

When I first started skiing, I was tethered to my instructor so that I didn’t become a “runaway”. Eventually I got good enough that I was able to ski untethered. But, for my first time back in 9 years, I expect that I’ll at least start out on the tether.

Awesome, @MrZoom 😎:+1:t3:

I alpine (downhill) skied once. That was enough, thankyouverymuch. ⛷️ 🚫 :no_good_woman:t2:

Years later, I learned to ski cross-country. 😍 :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: I continued to do so seasonally until I moved to a place where it didn’t snow and the closest sufficient snow base was too far away to make the trip worth my while (or so I thought; after I moved away, I discovered that I was wrong ). Despite several relocations since, I’ve never moved any closer to snow. It’s been twenty years since I last skied 😐

It is scary at first. I remember numerous times standing at the top of a given trail and looking down over the slope dropping away into air and wondering, can I really do this? But if you go often enough you improve at controlling your speed and you gain confidence then it just seems fun.

Skied for almost two hours this morning. Once I got over my initial nerves, it was like I never was away from it. Some good runs and NO FALLS. ⛷️

I skied without the tether today. Some falls, but about half of them were on the first run. Instructor told me that I was falling because I had the left outrigger too close to my monoski, and that was causing me to lose my balance. Once I made a conscious effort to keep a “wide stance”, I did much better. And I capped the day with two runs down the Mountaineer Terrain Park, which is not a beginner course.

Video of me skiing yesterday:

You make it look so easy, but I don’t think it is! Thanks so much for sharing that with us Mr.Zoom! I hope you go skiing again soon!

Yes, that’s what I meant! You should make plans to go next year!

That was really good. Are you able to guide your mono ski yourself and the other gentleman follows you holding the
tether? It looked like you had nice weather.

On Saturday, I did guide the mono ski myself while Mark held the tether. As stated above, on Sunday I skied without the tether, independently. (I did still need some help getting up from falls, and on and off the lifts.)
