When i used to go to the Eastern churches, they used to have little bottles of oil the people could take home to annoint themselves with. The oil was from the oil lamps in the church which burned in front of the icons.

And they also allowed us to take the Sacramental Oil for the sick home so we could annoint ourselves with ,even everyday if we were sick.

A Catholic person i know well is deteriorating from brain cancer, and as well as the Priest giving him the Sacrament of Annointing ,i would like to annoint him everyday also if possible,so instead of using oils from the Eastern Orthodox church,im wondering if there is anything from the Catholic church that i could use?

I often use Holy water from Fatima on his forehead, does anybody know anything about this water? is it miraculous or anything like that?

Im thinking of getting some Lourdes water, would that be good?

Or otherwise i could go to an Eastern Catholic church here and get the Sacramental oil from them to annoint him everyday with.

Chrism, Oil of catechumens, and the Oil of the Sick is usually stored in an ambry, a cabinet designed for the same. It may be near the sanctuary or in the sacristy. Ask your pastor for some to bring home with you. (ewtn.com/library/liturgy/zlitur100.htm)

Ok yes ive seen these oils in our churches here in glass cabinets
But it says on that link-

“The non-ordained faithful particularly assist the sick by being with them in difficult moments, encouraging them to receive the Sacraments of Penance and the Anointing of the Sick, by helping them to have the disposition to make a good individual confession as well as to prepare them to receive the Anointing of the Sick.** In using sacramentals, the non-ordained faithful should ensure that these are in no way regarded as sacraments whose administration is proper and exclusive to the Bishop and to the priest. Since they are not priests, in no instance may the non-ordained perform anointings either with the Oil of the Sick or any other oil.” **

From what its says ,lay people cannot annoint others with these oils
Or should i ask a priest?

But in the Orthodox lay people can use it themselves
i dont know about the Eastern Catholics

As always, ask a priest.

However, know that by using these oils, you are using a sacramental, not administering a sacrament.

sorry could you elaborate on that, whats the difference?
Sacramental: anything set apart or blessed by the Church to excite good thoughts and to increase devotion, and through these movements of the heart to remit venial sin. These things “raise our hearts and minds to God.” They also draw out attention to God. Sacramentals include: rosary beads, blessed oils, blessed salt, blessed candles, holy water, scapulars, crucifixes and icons, etc.

Sacrament: an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace. The CCC (1131) Elaborates further by saying, "The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the church, by which divine life is dispensed to us. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Examples of Sacraments are Baptism, Penance/Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, Holy Orders/Matrimony, and Anointing of the Sick.

In the Latin (a.k.a. “Roman”) Catholic Church anointing the parts of a sick person’s body with holy oil is reserved to priests, including bishops, of course. Lay persons cannot do this; not even deacons can do it. That’s why you won’t find a supply of holy oil in a Latin Catholic church for your use.

I didn’t know there was a classification of oils
a) reserved for sacraments (such as those kept in the ambry) as others are
b) sacramentals for home use (such as the oil from the shrine of Ste Anne de Beaupre).

From: catholicdoors.com/faq/qu332.htm
“Blessed Oil is a Sacramental that can be used by lay persons for personal use. It is forbidden for a lay person to use Blessed Oil to anoint one or more persons. When using Blessed Oil as a Sacramental, the lay person has an obligation to make it clear to those present that he is not administering a Sacrament, such being limited to a Bishop or priest. This is to ensure that there will be no confusion in the usage of the Sacramental.”
So, using blessed oil as a sacramental is different from *anointing, *as anointing is a special function of the clergy.

Here is a link to where this topic has been discussed before, a bit more in-depth and perhaps a little more heatedly.

I .
I have no idea what the practice is in the Eastern churches, they have their own canon law.

The sacrament of anointing of the sick using the oil of the sick consecrated by the bishop is reserved to the priest alone, not even the deacon can do it. If you care for your friend make sure the priest comes to him. There is no benefit in repeated anointings for the same illness.

In this diocese there is no such thing as “blessed oil” as a sacramental for the use of the laity, in a similar matter to holy water, in fact, laity including sisters, deacons, extraordinary ministers of communion or anyone ministering to the sick are expressly forbidden to attempt any such anointing with “blessed oils” from any source, to avoid confusion in the minds of the faithful with the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.

I don’t know whether you are making a general statement or if responding to what I said in Post #7. Either possibility could be implied. Whichever it is, a suitable answer is provided in Post #9.

So if the Eastern catholics allow me to take Oil for the sick home and annoint him, should i do that ?

Puzzleannie said theres no need to repeat it if the Latin preist annoints him,but i was advised once by clergy at the Eastern churches that we could annoint oneself daily if we were sick

and my friend is actually dying slowly from this cancer and there is nothing the doctors can do for him anymore

If i cant get to any from the Eastern Caths ,im thinking of using non sacramental Orthodox church oil ,would that be ok you think?

In my EF parish, the priest will bless a bottle of olive oil which makes it “blessed oil”, different than the holy oils of chrism oil (for confirmation) or the oil used for holy unction (for the sick). Parents are encouraged to use blessed oil to bless their children with a cross on their forehead before they go to bed. I’ve also been given a small vial of this type of blessed oil in confession, to use during times of extreme temptation or anxiety. It is a sacramental, like holy water. If you have an FSSP parish around, you may want to touch base with the priest to see if he can bless some olive oil for you.

What are you, Paul theApostle? Are you a Catholic? If you are a Catholic, are you an Eastern, Latin, or Oriental Catholic?

I think it would be appropriate to follow the praxis of your own proper Church. You can seek the advice of your parish priest (pastor) on this matter.

Wow, this is really interesting. Thanks for sharing. 👍

I am Latin Cath

I contacted an EF Preist and so am waiting to hear back from him

On my other question ,a poster mentioned the East caths do perform Holy unction and she said i may be able to take the oil home, thats what they do in Orth church…

but im not going to annoint my friend with Orth sacraments,so i dont see why i couldnt give him the Oil of Sick from the East Caths frequently ,instead of my latin preist annointing him once every few months

hes very ill we dont know how much longer he will be with us

Can the priest not anoint him more frequently? If everyone concerned is Latin Catholic then they should observe the praxis of their proper Church.

Yes, Catholics are Catholics, most definitely, whether Eastern, Latin, or Oriental. However, the churches are not the same in the discipline of their sacraments and sacramentals. They often differ in a variety of ways. It is, of course, possible for a Catholic to receive the sacraments in any Catholic church. However, we should not “mix up” the different expressions of Catholicism.

What about Communion,if i went once off to a Russian cath church which i have nearby and took communion ,what u think?

or would you say that if i wanted to go there then its better that i stay there permanantly, instead of going back and forth?

Yes, that is perfectly acceptable. You can receive communion in the Russian Catholic Church. It’s a Catholic Church.

That has to be your decision. Why would you want to go back and forth? Do you want to become immersed in the spirituality of the Russian Catholic Church?
