OK, I know it’s just a name, BUT!

My niece, who is my princess, my baby girl, is having her 1st 😃 She & her hard working husband are expecting in just a very few days. We know it’ll be a girl. OK, cool. They are naming her Lilith :eek: Now it is a very pretty sounding name. But I can’t get over the mythical & demonic context of the reference. The parents were not awhere of it & I have a strong rule of NEVER advising parents on a baby name.

Tel me it’ll be OK. Arggggg :crying:
 
Get them the “Cheers!” DVDs. The character named Lilith (who marries Frazier) is sufficiently unlikeable and annoying to turn them against the name forever.

I say it is ok to let parents know of something like this. They might not care about it and maybe their generation doesn’t know about the myths so it will not be a problem.

Okay, I thought Lilith was just a hypothetical character, created by some rabbis of long ago, to explain the existence of people beyond Adam & Eve’s immediate area.

I had NO idea of the whole demon thing, until I read the link I posted above. And yeah, I know wikipedia isn’t always the greatest source of information, but is this article accurate? Holy cow.
 
Why don’t you suggest Lily or Lillian as alternates? Most people would associate the name Lillith with the character on Cheers, and would do little to foster a feeling of warmth or tenderness.
 
I’d point out the origin of the name.

Also, are they Catholic? If they are, they will have to chose a Christian name for baptism - and it is best to have a Saint’s name.

I have an aunt named Lilith.

She is a nun.

Names don’t dictate the way people turn out.

Accurate enough. I knew about the deamon stuff before I knew of the old Jewish legends. I used to get into studing old mythology as a pastime. I found it intreaging.

Your suggestion is valid but I have never been able to bring myself to suggest names to potential parents no matter how close they were to me, or even if they asked me directly for advise. It is just something I’ve never done.

O well. Reading about the one members’ aunt by that name that is a nun did put me at ease about it 🙂 All will be good. She is only a few days away.

😉 I just hope she doesn’t get delayed till Holloween 😉
 
Interesting, I was just talking to my priest about this last night.

Some quasi-Christian new-agers believe that a woman named “Lilith” was created before Eve, but she was banished to the underworld and became a demon when she rebelled against God. (This was on one of those horrid History Channel programs a while back.)

This eventually led to many feminists coining the name “Lilith” as a symbol of feminine independence.

Maybe, just maybe between the nun aformantioned & the precious little one comming to the world soon, we can break the stigma assoicated with the name. Dang I hope so 😉
 
Our negative associations with the name are not based on any facts or anything biblical, but untrue and mythical stories. At least two boys at my kids’ school are named Damien, which I associate with the devil or anti-Christ. If they’re not calling her Jezebel, I wouldn’t read too much into it.

Damien is a good Christian name - a Saint’s name.
 
Your fears seem as unfounded and superstitious as the lore surrounding the name. I’m sure when you lay eyes on the innocent babe the last thing on your mind will be evil spirits and the like.

Damien is a saint’s name!

Oh yeah that movie about the devil’s spawn. What was that called? I forgot. 🤷
