I’d ask him "why are you making such a big deal about going to a CATHOLIC retreat with me? " Seems he wants to have it both ways…
This is simply an issue of personal ability and preference. Now you sound like you want to go.OK, guys. My friend convinced me that noone is going to ask you “Are you saved” or “convert” me. He said if someone did that then you can leave right there on the spot. He said the 3 discussions are all going to be very good. Nothing will be discussing how to evangelize people or anyone antagonizing someone’s beliefs that they are wrong. He said “We’re not Baptists” So then I was afraid about some type of healing praise and worship type stuff where they lay hands on people. He said NO!! We’re not going to bring out the rattle snakes. He promised me it will be fun. Plus how often do we get to do things together anymore with our busy lives. I mean we have been friends since H.School which is 18 yrs. I’m still skeptical a little but maybe I should go and see what it is all about. Free food, and it is out in a rural setting.
He doesn’t understand what I am afraid of. He said you play softball with these guys. He can 100% guarantee not a soul going to question my faith. Most of those guys already know and he is right noone has ever thought I was weird or anything like that.
So will it really harm anything?? I can assure you I’m not going to convert or question my own faith. He said who knows it may make you a better Catholic. The discussions he said are going to be nothing different then it this was a Catholic retreat. They are not going to be about theology as they are going to be more about morality in the workplace, being held accountable as a man to be the spirtual leader of the house and to show your faith by example vs by mouth. So there it is in a nutshell
I was Evangelical and I agree, some will definately think that.In thinking too I would not want others thinking WOW!! John is here maybe he is seeing the light!! That’s awesome and some might go overboard and think this is a time to bait him in. Not saying this is going to happen but being Evangelicals and anyone who believes so much into their faith that is only natural…
I don’t think it would be the same. Catholics and Evangelicals are different in this way. Sure, partly its due to the lax Catholics. But Catholcs who know their faith also would be unlikely to be this way too. A good Catholic usually tests the water for receptivity and shares, plants seeds, and does not think its his call to bring the other person to a decision. Probably because our worldview does not divide people so starkly into black and white - completely unsaved and completely saved - and each persons postion therein with God is simply discernable by whether they have taken the salvation decision step as they understand it. Being already saved themselves, they are basically “done” with themselves, so they can trun their attention on what you need to do! Their job now is to save others. Like you. I think it boils down to that. And since many Evangelicals think Catholics are likely to be unsaved, thats why you feel like you are in the spotlight there.I’m sure we would all think the same if a Non Catholic came to a Catholic retreat.
