He is still a successor to the Apostles, and if he was abused, he deserves compassion, not scorn.

Not my point. This is picking at the scab. He should have come out with this four years ago. Why now? He’s a shrewd one.

It took him four years to think it up?

Why not months ago when this was a heated problem. Why wait till it starts to die down to present this information. Why would anyone throw a match on their own house?

I doubt very much that Bishop Gumbleton is just ‘thinking’ this up. I heard enough from my small world to know that it might not be all that uncommon…that is clergy being sexually abused when they were children.
Bishop Gumblton is quite brave to admit this publicly.
“I know how difficult it is for me to speak about what happened.”
No one has the right to honked off here. Let us try to be a little sensitive to other’s stories…bishops, priests and laypeople alike.

I’d also like to add that few see how important the rest of this whole terrible sex scandal story is. This is an important part of it all. The truth hurts.

You are missing the point. Yes we understand it is painful. Yes I know how painful it is. It is the way he chose to do this. Obviously you do not know Bishop Gumbleton like we know him.

Oh why not just hit the Michigan Catholic with this information. Why pick one of the biggest papers in Detroit to tell this story.

I don’t need to know him like you know him. Bp. Gumbleton is obviously a victim of sex abuse. Somewhere along the line he ‘got it’ and learned what is right and wrong. I don’t find anything diabolical about his timing…Gumbleton is just a human…like you and me.

My question is, why as a Priest and Bishop for so many years, would he suddenly need to share this terrible personal experience? Knowing how much suffering and punitive actions have been undertaken, litigations and financial compensations concluded, why would he want to add to the misery. Why did he not take action over the many years to purge the ranks of this type of evil? He had no end of “causes” to pursue. He was in the right position and time to protect the priesthood from deviant types who as history reveals were very active and not shy about their perverted behaviors. Sharing his story for what good? Big headlines to please those who hate the Catholic Church and further their attacks is the result and IMO not enacted by a desire to help the Church or the recovery of those who have suffered.
Much is wrong about this revelation.

Good point. If you look up any information on him you will see he did just the opposite. He did everything to protect the homosexual people priests etc. He has always been very much involed in Call to Action a group that also supports this.

A bishop has a lot more power than the average priest when it comes to this issue.

Don’t get me wrong I have prayed for years for this bishop and will continue to pray. I think it is very sad that he chose this time to throw out his information.

After so much has been revealed over the past decade I have come to believe the Church sex scandal is indicative of the sick world we live in. I’ve read all the books and news articles and reports about the sex crisis in the Church. After all I can’t help but recall the encounters I had growing up.

‘Rose’ and I were just 8 when she tearfully told me how an older brother/babysitter sexually abused her.

In 5th grade music class ‘Scott’ sat next to me pressing his eyes to keep in the tears…he confided that his own father touched him between his legs in ways he did not like.

In high school ‘Kelly’ sat behind me on the bus that returned the students to the school after CCD classes…her watery eyes stared out the window as she told me through the seat that seperated us how her father sexually abused her.

How can it be that I know of so many young people who were sexually abused?

In light of Bp. Gumbleton’s recent public revelation I’d say that we should all think about just how big the problem of child exploitation is.

I think that those with less compassion or understanding through no fault of their own…don’t understand sexual abuse. What I’ve learned in my adult life after hearing more sex abuse stories is that not all children press back tears or suffer in ways that others suffer. Some pass through sex abuse and deal with it later in life in sick and abnormal ways. It is sometimes difficult to understand why others do what they do. It is difficult not to pass judgement…no one should pass judgement on Bp. Gumbleton

fair enough…

Now… if only the good Bishop would stop passing judgment in comflict with so many church teachings

As one abused at three years old by my uncle, and having a daughter who was molested at 8 right after she had made her first communion by the old man across the street who was a regular usher in my parish believe me I know the pain. After having my daughter find child pornography on her (now) x’s husbands computer
I sat through the class virtus and cried. I have many nights I don’t sleep. So to say I do not understand. You will never know.I understand it is about timing in this case.

Your story is very sad…I am sorry for both you and your daughter.
I can’t explain Bp. Gumbleton’s timing…I am respectful of his strength to come out with this.

I think Bp. Gumbleton’s conflict with Church teachings maybe a result of cynicism due in part to his sexual abuse.

I think that would make it more sad… that his superiors (yeh, you Cardinal Maida) did not help or remove him… and still don’t

I am inclined to go along with you.
Now would be a good time for Bp. Gumbleton to retire in light of this serious revelation…Bp. Gumbleton needs some serious healing. We should pray for him.

He has been asked to retire more than once and has refused. So what now you defrock a bishop cause a schism in the church. He does have a whole lot of followers. Cardinal Maida has tried to quiet him everytime he was in the paper for his liberal agenda.

Sorry, but this is no excuse for going against the Church…no one forced him to become a priest. The only good that could have come from this would have been for him to say:

"Yes, it’s horrible the abuse that occurs in and out of the Church. I know, I was a victim too. But I moved on, and I lived my life without letting being fondled as an adolescent ruin my life. " Instead, he acknowledged that what happened to him was relatively insignificant --he isn’t claiming he wasn’t able to carry on with his life plan --AND he still felt he needed to make a public disclosure that can only hurt the Church. It would be one thing if the accused abuser were still around to be punished or to defend himself, but this seems like poor timing and poor judgment.
