Confiteor:
–AND he still felt he needed to make a public disclosure that can only hurt the Church. It would be one thing if the accused abuser were still around to be punished or to defend himself, but this seems like poor timing and poor judgment.
Well said.

I have more than a strong feeling there are others in similar positions as Bp. Gumbleton’s. There are others who have personal sex abuse stories but are not revealing them. Why has Bp. Gumbleton revealed this now? I can’t say… his revelation will pass… and maybe someday there will be other clergy who come forward with similar stories.
Set aside the damage you feel he has done and realize the problem of child sex abuse goes far beyond the parameters of the Church.
The more I think about it the more I am convinced the whole Church sex scandal is more about the terrible widespread problem of child sex abuse in all walks of life rather than abuse of power in the Church.

I have to agree with you here. It is in all walks of life. Pornography is rampid, but look at our televisions, internet, children today are victims of adults who have to much filth in their lives. Because of this we have a large population of sexual abuse in all walks of life.
Pray pray pray. I did not write that post for pity by the way. This subject just infuriates me. By the way my uncle was molested as an altar boy. But either way you cut it people can blame their lives and faults on being abused. We can look at the pieta and see the greatest example of suffering and can go on. Because we know our Mother did.

I stated something to these regards on the other thread. I honestly don’t doubt what Bp. Gumbleton says is true. Its a terrible thing that should NEVER happen to anyone. He, of all the bishops in the country (to my knowledge), thus would have some of the most insight into the abuse issues. He has been a bishop for 38 years now. Has he used his insight into this issue to fight abuse? If he has done nothing about it in his 38 years as bishop, then this is nothing but an absolute tragedy. As a bishop, he has a degree of power a layman or a priest may not have. If indeed he was silent in those 38 years, how much could have been prevented? I don’t pretend to understand the man or what he is thinking. There may have been a legitimate reason why he remained silent. I only hope that he was working behind the scenes somehow to prevent these abuse tragedies. I just can’t comprehend a Bishop who was once abused not working to prevent the pain that he suffered from occuring to others. I truly truly hope that we are missing a part of the puzzle.

What most of us see and hear is only the tip of the iceberg. You might consider AIDS as an epidemic, but child abuse and adultry are pandemic. May God have mercy on His world.
